On the role of Eurasian autumn snow cover in dynamical seasonal predictions

Paolo Ruggieri et al.

Summary: Seasonal predictions rely on predictable or persistent components of the Earth system, such as autumn snow cover over Eurasia, which can alter energy exchange and impact atmospheric behavior locally and remotely. While lagged relationships exist between Eurasian snow cover and atmospheric modes of variability in the Northern Hemisphere, climate models often struggle to reproduce observed relationships accurately. The role of autumn Eurasian snow cover in seasonal forecasts remains somewhat unclear.

Spurious Late Historical-Era Warming in CESM2 Driven by Prescribed Biomass Burning Emissions

J. T. Fasullo et al.

Summary: Using the CMIP6 forcing database, it was found that a spurious increase in prescribed biomass burning emissions resulted in warming in the Northern Hemisphere extratropics. Through targeted sensitivity experiments, it was shown that this warming was specifically caused by biomass burning variability from 40 degrees to 70 degrees N, which led to cloud thinning and an increase in absorbed solar radiation. This study highlights the potential pitfalls of incorporating discontinuities in climate forcing data sets.

Seasonal Prediction of Tropical Cyclones over the North Atlantic and Western North Pacific

Daniel J. Befort et al.

Summary: This study analyzed seasonal forecasting models from five European modeling centers to study tropical cyclones over the western North Pacific and North Atlantic basins. The models were able to capture the observed seasonal cycle of cyclone frequencies, but there were large differences in numbers and spatial track densities. While predictions for the western North Pacific basin were often unreliable, most models provided reliable predictions for the North Atlantic basin and were skillful in predicting interannual cyclone variability in a region covering the Caribbean and North American coastline.

Global Carbon Budget 2021

Pierre Friedlingstein et al.

Summary: Accurate assessment of anthropogenic CO2 emissions and their redistribution among different components is critical for understanding the global carbon cycle. This study presents datasets and methodologies to quantify the major components of the global carbon budget. The results show changes in fossil fuel and land-use change emissions, as well as atmospheric CO2 concentration, ocean CO2 sink, and terrestrial CO2 sink.

Understanding the signal-to-noise paradox in decadal climate predictability from CMIP5 and an eddying global coupled model

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: Recent research indicates the signal-to-noise paradox in seasonal-to-decadal climate predictions. Models may make better predictions of observations than they predict themselves due to unrealistically small signal-to-noise ratios. This paradox underscores a potential issue in model predictions, as previous studies may have underestimated predictability limits.

Relating model bias and prediction skill in the equatorial Atlantic

Francois Counillon et al.

Summary: Anomaly coupling improves the accuracy and reliability of reanalysis in the tropical Atlantic and enhances seasonal prediction skill in the equatorial Atlantic. However, it may slightly dampen the amplitude of Atlantic Nino and Nina events, and there is a predictability barrier in June forecasting.

Metrics for Evaluating Tropical Cyclones in Climate Data

Colin M. Zarzycki et al.

Summary: This article introduces a software suite for objectively evaluating the representation of tropical cyclones in gridded climate data, comparing different products using defined metrics. The study finds that higher-resolution models and models with tropical cyclone-specific assimilation have more accurate storm climatologies. It also explores the sensitivity of Earth system models to individual parameterizations in simulating tropical cyclones.

Two-Year Dynamical Predictions of ENSO Event Duration during 1954-2015

Xian Wu et al.

Summary: Multiyear ensemble forecasts using the CESM1 model show that the durations of El Nino and La Nina events can be predicted, especially when initialized in November. This predictability is attributed to initial thermocline depth anomalies in the equatorial Pacific and sea surface temperature anomalies within and outside the tropical Pacific.

Seasonal to multi-year soil moisture drought forecasting

Musa Esit et al.

Summary: The study found that soil moisture has significant predictability on seasonal to decadal timescales over North America, despite limited predictability in precipitation. On sub-seasonal to seasonal timescales, soil moisture predictability is higher than precipitation, suggesting that land surface processes play a role in transforming a less predictable precipitation signal into a more predictable soil moisture signal.

Summary: Climate variability plays a crucial role in climate adaptation efforts, and greenhouse warming alters variance spectra of Earth system variables, leading to a wide range of changes. The modeling results have important implications for climate adaptation, resource management, seasonal predictions, and assessing stressors on terrestrial and marine ecosystems.

Summary: This study presents a global dataset of surface ocean parameters, including dissolved inorganic carbon, total alkalinity, partial pressure of CO2, pH, and saturation state with respect to mineral CaCO3, from 1985 to 2018. The dataset, named OceanSODA-ETHZ, was created by extrapolating surface ocean observations using a newly developed method.
