Recent Developments in Cellulose Nanomaterial Composites

Caitlyn M. Clarkson et al.

Summary: Cellulose nanomaterials are strong, stiff, nontoxic, biodegradable, and sustainable, but face challenges in compatibility with man-made materials and commercialization efforts. Current research aims to address these challenges and improve properties to compete with existing materials.

Production routes to tailor the performance of cellulose nanocrystals

Oriana M. Vanderfleet et al.

Summary: This Review evaluates the properties of CNCs from more than 30 production routes and 40 biomass sources to guide users in selecting the right material for their desired application. CNCs produced by various methods are assessed against three target properties: colloidal stability, size, and crystallinity index. Alternative production routes and starting materials are suggested to overcome challenges associated with CNC use, including improving compatibility with hydrophobic materials, resistance to thermal degradation, and colloidal stability in high ionic strength environments.

One-step recovery of valuable metals from spent Lithium-ion batteries and synthesis of persulfate through paired electrolysis

Weiguang Lv et al.

Summary: A paired electrolysis method was developed for the simultaneous recycling of valuable metals from spent lithium-ion batteries and the synthesis of persulfate, reducing energy consumption by approximately 30% and improving product quality. This green method has wide application prospects in waste recycling and hydrometallurgical fields due to its low energy consumption and generation of high-value products.

Lignin promoted the fast formation of a robust and highly conductive deep eutectic solvent ionic gel at room temperature for a flexible quasi-solid-state supercapacitor and strain sensors

Jiake Wang et al.

Summary: The green synthesis approach of ionic gels using deep eutectic solvent (DES) allowed for the preparation of highly strong and conductive gels by utilizing the dynamic redox reaction between lignin and Fe-2(SO4)(3). These gels demonstrated extreme temperature stability, excellent stretchability, and increased electrical conductivity. The potential applications of these gels in supercapacitors and wearable sensors in flexible electronics were highlighted.

An environmentally friendly and economical strategy to cyclically produce cellulose nanocrystals with high thermal stability and high yield

Feng Tang et al.

Summary: A green and economical method for the sustainable mass production of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) was developed using ferric chloride (FeCl3) solution as a solvent. The FeCl3 solution provided an acidic environment for rapid hydrolysis of cellulose to produce CNCs, and could be reused after simple separation. The prepared CNCs showed excellent thermal stability and were able to support the polymerization of Py uniformly on their surface.
