A novel framework for integration analysis of large-scale photovoltaic plants into weak grids

Sainbold Saranchimeg et al.

Summary: The study proposes a novel framework for integration analysis of large-scale PV plants into weak grids using distinct generation profiles, providing robust voltage and accurate energy estimations. Application of different generation profiles showed varying impacts on voltage violations and annual generation, with PMG profile overestimating generation and AG outperforming in energy analysis, suggesting the framework could improve the assessment of PV plant integration into weak grids.

A techno-economic assessment of hybrid energy systems in rural Pakistan

Fahad Ali et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop a rural energy system design framework and analyze the techno-economic feasibility of hybrid energy systems for rural electrification in a village in Pakistan. The results suggest that a community power system based on solar PV is the most feasible solution, and grid-integrated systems are more economical than off-grid systems. The hybrid energy system is capable of providing continuous electricity to the site 24/7.

Assessing the financial sustainability of rural grid electrification pathway: A case study of India

Auroshis Rout et al.

Summary: India has achieved universal electricity access, but the financial sustainability of supplying electricity in rural areas remains a key concern due to significant annual losses. A study suggests that tariff revision, loss reduction, and load factor improvement could help reduce the financial gap and improve sustainability.

Determinants of off-grid electrification choice and expenditure: Evidence from Bangladesh

Shakila Aziz et al.

Summary: The level of education of household members, particularly females, influences the choice of electricity services, while male education level is linked to total electricity expenditure. Property ownership predicts the choice of higher tier electricity access. Higher income and higher education level of males in households are associated with energy stacking between solar home systems and mini-grid connections.

Socio-economic and environmental impacts of rural electrification with Solar Photovoltaic systems: Evidence from southern Ethiopia

Yibeltal T. Wassie et al.

Summary: This study examines the drivers and impacts of rural electrification with Solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems in Ethiopia, finding that the use of solar PV systems is growing and can lead to cost savings, increased electricity production, and higher income for rural households. However, challenges such as poor quality products, high costs, lack of after-sales services, and limited access to credit financing sources were also identified.

Enhancing energy models with geo-spatial data for the analysis of future electrification pathways: The case of Tanzania

Matteo Rocco et al.

Summary: This research models and contrasts alternative electrification pathways for Tanzania in the time frame 2015-2040, finding that policy goals are achievable but require significant investment. Environmental policies can lower carbon intensity and reduce electricity costs, while achieving universal access to electricity may be possible earlier but may pose challenges in reducing carbon intensity or electricity costs.

Socioeconomic impacts of household participation in emission trading scheme: A Computable General Equilibrium-based case study

Kangxin An et al.

Summary: Policy on household carbon reduction behavior plays a vital role in climate actions but is often overlooked in practice. The current uncontrolled household energy consumption under existing policies is inefficient towards achieving ambitious climate targets. Household participation in emission trading schemes (ETS) is identified as a valuable solution. Through a case study of China, it is found that household participation can significantly reduce carbon emissions, mitigation costs, household welfare loss, and impact social equity by 2050. The allocation mechanism of carbon allowances also has a significant impact on household welfare and social equity, showcasing the benefits of household participation in ETS and providing insights for policymakers to design careful and reasonable household carbon reduction policies globally.

Hybrid renewable energy applications in zero-energy buildings and communities integrating battery and hydrogen vehicle storage*

Jia Liu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that battery storage can improve the self-consumption of renewable energy, load coverage, efficiency of hydrogen systems, and grid integration of zero-energy communities. Compared to baseline scenarios, zero-energy scenarios with battery storage can reduce grid penalty costs, increase lifetime net present value, and significantly reduce carbon emissions.

Understanding the path towards a clean energy transition and post-electrification patterns of rural households

Cristina Dominguez et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the transition towards clean energy in rural areas, from households without electricity access to national electricity, examining off-grid renewable technology access and post-electrification years. Findings reveal that factors like male household heads, peer pressure, and good quality housing materials increase the likelihood of grid-electricity adoption, while higher electricity prices and service unreliability decrease these probabilities.

Electrification for the elite? Examining whether electrification programs reach the poor in Bolivia

Laura M. Hinestroza-Olascuaga et al.

Summary: This paper examines Bolivia's Government initiatives to achieve universal electricity coverage by 2025, including the PEVD program and community targeting criteria. Results show that using the UBN index can effectively target the poorest communities, but complementing it with indicators like the MPI can enhance poverty measurement accuracy and rural electrification interventions. However, additional investments are needed to increase electricity access rates in specific states to reach universal access goals.

Consideration of culture is vital if we are to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals

Xinzhu Zheng et al.

Summary: The study found that cultural traits are closely linked to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals and cultural values can explain up to 26% of the variations in SDG achievements. However, there are significant divergences across different cultural traits and indicators. This implies the importance of considering cultural contexts and nuances in sustainability science communication and policy design to develop effective cross-disciplinary solutions for sustainability challenges.
