Theory of nuclear fission

Nicolas Schunck et al.

Summary: Atomic nuclei are systems composed of protons and neutrons held together by strong nuclear forces. Nuclear fission is a phenomenon where nuclei can break into fragments and decay by emitting particles. Understanding this complex process is crucial for studying atomic nuclei.

Time-dependent generator coordinate method study of fission: Dissipation effects

Jie Zhao et al.

Summary: This study combines quantum theory of dissipation and time-dependent generator coordinate method (TDGCM) to incorporate dissipation effects in the description of induced fission dynamics. By accounting for the dissipation of energy from collective motion into intrinsic degrees of freedom through the addition of an extra term in the Hamiltonian, the effectiveness of this approach is demonstrated through a calculation of induced fission in Th-228.

Scission configuration in self-consistent calculations with neck constraints

R. Han et al.

Summary: The calculations of potential-energy surface in the fission process are crucial, and in this paper, it is shown that there is no discontinuity in the potential-energy surface when multi-constrained calculations are applied. The study also discusses the importance of neck rupture in terms of nuclear matter density distribution and energy decrease, and examines the properties of the neck in different fission modes.

Energy and pairing dependence of dissipation in real-time fission dynamics

Yu Qiang et al.

Summary: This work presents a microscopic study of dissipation in fission dynamical evolutions with the time-dependent Hartree-Fock + BCS method, extracting friction coefficients and dissipation energies. It is shown that dissipation increases with increasing initial excitation energies or decreasing pairing strengths, playing a significant role in the final stage of scission. The characteristics of dissipations demonstrated in this study will be valuable for calibrations of various fission models.

Microscopic self-consistent description of induced fission: Dynamical pairing degree of freedom

Jie Zhao et al.

Summary: The role of dynamical pairing in induced fission dynamics was investigated using the time-dependent generator coordinate method, showing a pronounced effect on collective inertia and collective flux, leading to reduced asymmetric peaks and enhanced symmetric fission yields in better agreement with empirical trends.

Fission dynamics of compound nuclei: Pairing versus fluctuations

Yu Qiang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the energy dependence of fission observables, revealing a lengthening of the evolution time towards scission at finite temperature. With increasing excitation, the role of dynamical pairing diminishes while random transitions between single-particle levels around the Fermi surface become indispensable for driving fission. The obtained fission yields and total kinetic energies, divided into two asymmetric scission channels, showed that with increasing fluctuations the S2 channel predominates over the S1 channel, resulting in spreading fission observables.

Fission fragment mass distribution in the 32S+144Sm reaction

T. N. Nag et al.

Summary: The study investigated the nature of fission fragment mass distribution in the S-32 + Sm-144 -> Pt-176 reaction, revealing a flattop distribution that was better fitted by a two-Gaussian function. The observed mass distribution suggested contributions from multimodal fission with both symmetric and asymmetric components.
