Multiscale Temporal Variations of Atmospheric Mercury Distinguished by the Hilbert-Huang Transform Analysis Reveals Multiple El Nino-Southern Oscillation Links

Ly Sy Phu Nguyen et al.

Summary: The study revealed the influence of El Nino-Southern Oscillation on gaseous elemental mercury concentrations in East Asia, especially in terms of the interannual variability of GEM concentrations. El Nino may result in weaker GEM annual cycles, increasing the instability of atmospheric mercury cycling.

Speciated atmospheric mercury during haze and non-haze periods in winter at an urban site in Beijing, China: Pollution characteristics, sources, and causes analyses

Chunjie Wang et al.

Summary: During February to March 2018, speciated atmospheric mercury levels in Beijing, China showed significant variations, with GEM and PBM2.5 concentrations notably higher during haze periods, possibly due to the accumulation of pollutants caused by strong subsidence of air masses. There was no significant difference in GOM concentrations between haze and non-haze periods.

Impact of emission reductions and meteorology changes on atmospheric mercury concentrations during the COVID-19 lockdown

Qingru Wu et al.

Summary: The study found that lockdown measures and unfavorable meteorological conditions impact anthropogenic mercury emissions and atmospheric mercury concentration. Mercury emissions and concentration in the atmosphere decreased by approximately 16.7 kg/day and 0.10 ng/m(3) respectively during the lockdown period, while changes in meteorology increased atmospheric mercury by 0.41 ng/m(3).

Exploratory investigation on spatiotemporal variation and source identification of atmospheric speciated mercury surrounding the Taiwan Strait

Chung-Shin Yuan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the speciated mercury in the atmosphere surrounding the Taiwan Strait, finding that the mercury primarily came from local sources and long-range transport from Northeast Asia. Seasonal variations were influenced by the Asian Northeastern Monsoons and clean marine air masses during different seasons.

Quantifying the impacts of anthropogenic and natural perturbations on gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) at a suburban site in eastern China using generalized additive models

Lei Zhang et al.

Summary: Long-term observation and statistical models were used to study the impacts of anthropogenic and natural perturbations on atmospheric mercury concentration in eastern China. The results showed significant effects of meteorological factors and anthropogenic emissions on GEM concentrations. With decreasing anthropogenic emissions, the influence of meteorological factors on GEM becomes more prominent.
