Preorganization of N,O-hybrid phosphine oxide chelators for effective extraction of trivalent Am/Eu ions - a computational study

Cheriyan Ebenezer et al.

Summary: In this study, four different ligands were optimized using computational calculations to understand their complexation and extraction of Am(III) and Eu(III) in a water medium. The results demonstrate the different effects of the different ligands on the complexation and separation processes. This study helps redefine the parameters required for lanthanide/actinide separation in nuclear-waste management.

Biphen[n]arenes: Modular Synthesis, Customizable Cavity Sizes, and Diverse Skeletons

Zhi-Yuan Zhang et al.

Summary: Macrocyclic compounds are important tools in supramolecular chemistry, but traditional macrocycles have limitations in accommodating large molecules or structures. We have developed a versatile and modular strategy for synthesizing a new family of macrocycles, biphen[n]arenes, with customizable cavity sizes and diverse backbones. These biphen[n]arenes exhibited interesting recognition properties and self-assembly abilities, showing potential applications in various fields.

Selective complexation of trivalent americium over europium with substituted Triazolebipyridine-based ligand in high Level-Liquid Waste- A DFT Investigation

Abigail G. Jennifer et al.

Summary: This study investigates the potential application of a new ligand, EH-BTzBP, in the separation of trivalent actinides and lanthanides. The results show that by substituting the ligand, its selectivity can be tuned, with nitro group substitution significantly enhancing selectivity towards actinides.

Does the length of the alkyl chain affect the complexation and selectivity of phenanthroline-derived phosphonate ligands?-Answers from DFT calculations

Cheriyan Ebenezer et al.

Summary: The study designed a series of POPhen ligands with different lengths of alkyl chains using DFT calculations, finding that the n-butyl substituted ligand exhibited better extraction capability and selectivity towards Am(III) ions. This work highlighted the ideal alkyl chain length (n-butyl) required for better binding and extraction capability of POPhen ligands, emphasizing the need for tailoring ligands with optimum alkyl chain for effective lanthanide/actinide separation.

Host-guest complex properties of calix[4]arene derivatives: a DFT study of adsorption and sensing of an anticancer drug, 5-fluorouracil

Numan Yuksel et al.

Summary: This study investigated the host-guest complex properties of calix[4]arene compounds against the anticancer drug 5-fluorouracil using density functional theory calculations at room temperature. It was found that the water-soluble calix[4]arene compound with sulfonyl (-SO3H) groups exhibited the strongest interaction with the 5-FU drug. Additionally, HOMO-LUMO gaps of all calix[4]arene compounds decreased in the presence of the drug molecule.
