Decoupling livestock and crop production at the household level in China

Shuqin Jin et al.

Summary: The study finds a significant decrease in the proportion of rural Chinese households engaging in both livestock raising and crop planting, highlighting the need to rebuild the connections for sustainable agriculture. Livestock manure, once a key source of nutrients in traditional farming, is now being underutilized, leading to resource wastage and environmental damage. Rebuilding the links between livestock and croplands at a regional scale offers important opportunities for the sustainable intensification of agriculture in China.

Nitrogen mineralization from organic fertilizers and composts: Literature survey and model fitting

Daniel Geisseler et al.

Summary: The study collected nitrogen turnover data from 113 datasets to fit a model simulating gross N mineralization and immobilization of various organic amendments. Results showed different nitrogen availability and stability among organic materials, with feather meal and guano having higher mineral N content compared to poultry manure and poultry manure compost. The model performance varied among different organic amendment groups, possibly due to incubation protocols and variability in amendment properties not considered by the model.

Quantification of global and national nitrogen budgets for crop production

Xin Zhang et al.

Summary: Input-output estimates of nitrogen on cropland are essential for improving nitrogen management and understanding the global nitrogen cycle. While most datasets show similar patterns, some annual estimates vary widely, leading to large ranges of uncertainty. The comparison of nitrogen budget terms by country reveals areas for improvement.

Food systems are responsible for a third of global anthropogenic GHG emissions

M. Crippa et al.

Summary: Data on GHG emissions from the global food system are often scattered and unavailable, but EDGAR-FOOD provides a consistent database from 1990 to 2015. The largest contributions to food-system emissions come from agriculture and supply chain activities, representing 34% of total global GHG emissions.

Innovative management programme reduces environmental impacts in Chinese vegetable production

Xiaozhong Wang et al.

Summary: Chinese vegetable production, which occupies a small percentage of the global crop planting area, utilizes a large amount of chemical fertilizers and contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. Through an innovative management program, it is possible to produce more vegetables while reducing environmental impacts. The integrated knowledge and products strategy has been shown to decrease nitrogen fertilizer usage and greenhouse gas emissions, while increasing yield.
