Synthesis of novel carvone (meth)acrylate monomers for the production of hydrophilic polymers with high terpene content

Ulisse Montanari et al.

Summary: Research has shown that terpene-based monomers and polymers are typically hydrophobic, which restricts their use in aqueous environments. To address this limitation, a novel synthetic strategy was developed to improve the hydrophilicity and polar group content on the polymer side chains by functionalizing a model terpene monomer.

Functionalisable Epoxy-rich Electrospun Fibres Based on Renewable Terpene for Multi-Purpose Applications

Ulisse Montanari et al.

Summary: A novel bio-based polymer was developed and incorporated into poly(vinylidene fluoride) fibers through a simple electrospinning process, resulting in functionalizable epoxy groups at the fiber surface. This new method has the potential for widespread application in the functionalization of fiber materials, demonstrated in applications such as carbon fiber reinforced composites and enzyme immobilization membranes.

RAFT polymerisation of renewable terpene (meth)acrylates and the convergent synthesis of methacrylate-acrylate-methacrylate triblock copolymers

Rachel L. Atkinson et al.

Summary: Terpenes are considered ideal candidates for sustainable polymer feedstocks due to their natural abundance and availability from existing waste streams. By using RAFT control, well-defined polymers and precise di- and multiblock copolymer architectures can be synthesized. A wide range of T-g values are observed for terpene (meth)acrylate homopolymers, which can be utilized to create renewably-sourced hard-soft block copolymers.
