Distal remnant length can be measured reliably and predicts primary repair of proximal anterior cruciate ligament tears

Harmen D. Vermeijden et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that tear location can be reliably quantified on MRI by assessing distal and proximal remnant lengths. A proximal quarter tear of the ACL was found to have a positive predictive value for repairability of 94%. Older age was correlated with more proximal tear location, but tear location showed no correlation with gender, BMI, or timing of surgery.

Role of Age on Success of Arthroscopic Primary Repair of Proximal Anterior Cruciate Ligament Tears

Harmen D. Vermeijden et al.

Summary: The study found that patients aged 21 or younger have a high failure rate of primary repair of proximal ACL tears (37.0%), while patients older than 21 have lower failure rates, lower complication rates, and good subjective scores after repair.
