A comprehensive assessment on bioavailability, leaching characteristics and potential risk of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in biochars produced by a continuous pyrolysis system

Xiuli Shen et al.

Summary: The study assessed the potential risks of PAHs in biochars produced by a continuous pyrolysis system, finding that total PAHs concentrations exceeded standards and posed a potential carcinogenic risk when biochar application rates were high. Despite low percentages of bioavailable PAHs, the study highlighted significant concerns regarding potential health risks and phytotoxicity in biochars produced through continuous pyrolysis systems.

Phosphorus mining from eutrophic marine environment towards a blue economy: The role of bio-based applications

Ece Kendir Cakmak et al.

Summary: Global phosphorus reserves are in danger of depletion due to increased consumption and mismanagement. Moreover, excess nutrients have led to eutrophication in many marine water bodies. This review discusses sustainable strategies for phosphorus removal and recovery from marine environments, with a focus on bio-based approaches using natural phosphorus uptake and release metabolism. However, there is a need for more research on the technical applicability of these strategies, and coupling phosphorus mining with other pathways for improved sustainability and economic viability is suggested. Environmental, economic, and societal challenges need to be addressed before large-scale implementation.

Unraveling natural aging-induced properties change of sludge-derived hydrochar and enhanced cadmium sorption site heterogeneity

Bingyu Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the changing properties and sorption behavior of hydrochar through natural aging, and compares the effects of different aging strategies and biochar types. The results show that the increased ash content in aged hydrochar enhances its sorption capability for cadmium. Linear regression analysis indicates significant differences in sorption behavior between different aging strategies. Therefore, studies involving natural aging with multiple environmental factors are preferred.

Selective adsorption behavior and mechanism of phosphate in water by different lanthanum modified biochar

Yimin Huang et al.

Summary: Lanthanum-based adsorbents, specifically lanthanum carbonate/biochar and lanthanum hydroxide/biochar composites, were synthesized and their selectivity for phosphate adsorption was studied. The results showed that lanthanum hydroxide/biochar exhibited higher selectivity for phosphate and was less influenced by environmental conditions. Additionally, the presence of competing ions accelerated the intermediate process of phosphate adsorption by lanthanum hydroxide/biochar.

Predicting the effect of dissolved humic acid on sorption of benzotriazole to biochar

Lin Wu et al.

Summary: Dissolved organic matter has dual roles in affecting the sorption properties of biochar for organic contaminants. On one hand, it inhibits the adsorption of contaminants by competing for sites and/or blocking pores. On the other hand, it promotes the partitioning of contaminants by serving as an additional partitioning phase. A modified dual-mode model that includes the concentration of dissolved organic matter can predict the effect on sorption properties.

Kimmo Arola et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the usability of a novel two-stage tertiary nanofiltration process for further purification of MBR permeate from municipal wastewater treatment and minimization of nanofiltration concentrate volume. The results demonstrated that the process efficiently decreased COD and TOC content, achieved phosphorus recovery without the need for precipitation chemicals, and prevented membrane fouling through shear-enhanced nanofiltration.
