Fully Dynamic High-Resolution Model for Dispersion of Icelandic Airborne Mineral Dust

Bojan Cvetkovic et al.

Summary: Icelandic topsoil sediments are the largest and most important source of mineral dust in Europe. This study designed a dynamic coupled atmosphere-dust numerical modeling system to simulate and predict the Icelandic mineral dust process and assess its impacts on air quality, human health, transportation, climate, and marine ecosystems. The model demonstrated its capability to forecast major transport features and can be used as an operational forecasting system or a tool for assessing Icelandic dust impacts.

Overview: Recent advances in the understanding of the northern Eurasian environments and of the urban air quality in China - a Pan-Eurasian Experiment (PEEX) programme perspective

Hanna K. Lappalainen et al.

Summary: This study summarizes the results obtained in the northern Eurasian region and urban environments in China over the past 5 years in the context of the PEEX program. The study finds that although scientific knowledge in these regions has increased, there are still limitations and gaps in our understanding of large-scale climate-Earth surface interactions and feedbacks. The lack of coordinated and continuous in situ observations and integrative data analyses hinder a comprehensive system analysis.

Increasing dust emission from ice free terrain in southeastern Greenland since 2000

Tomomi Amino et al.

Summary: Mineral dust plays a significant role in both local and global climates, affecting ice nucleus formation and albedo. A study in southeastern Greenland shows an increase in coastal dust emissions, attributed to warming and decreased snow cover after 2000.

Particle-scale characterization of volcaniclastic dust sources within Iceland

Tamar Richards-Thomas et al.

Summary: Volcaniclastic dust particles from Iceland are characterized by substantial quantities of amorphous glass, large internal voids, and dustcoats comprised of nano-scale flakes. Their high porosity, which increases with particle diameter, generates lower particle densities than expected for solid spheres, potentially leading to a five-fold increase in expected residence time.

Potential Source Contribution Function Analysis of High Latitude Dust Sources over the Arctic: Preliminary Results and Prospects

Stefano Crocchianti et al.

Summary: This study presents the results of a preliminary investigation of the dust sources in the Arctic based on their geochemical properties using the potential source contribution function (PSCF) analysis. Four different dust source areas were characterized by distinguishing geochemical ranges and seasonal occurrence. Icelandic dust samples showed peculiar but highly variable characteristics related to their geographical source regions.

Dissolved Fe Supply to the Central Gulf of Alaska Is Inferred to Be Derived From Alaskan Glacial Dust That Is Not Resolved by Dust Transport Models

John Crusius

Summary: Re-examination of dissolved iron time-series data in the central Gulf of Alaska reveals an increase in iron inventories between September and February, suggesting a potential source of iron from Alaskan glacial dust. The existing global dust models fail to replicate this dust flux due to inadequate spatial resolution to capture the high winds generating the dust. Confirmation of this iron source could have implications for understanding dust sources from narrow mountain valleys globally.

Revised map of European aeolian deposits derived from soil texture data

Pascal Bertran et al.

Summary: European aeolian deposits have been mapped using a topsoil texture database and compiled information on loess sections. Variations in mineralogy of dust in an ice core obtained from northwestern Greenland over the past 100 years

Naoko Nagatsuka et al.

Summary: Our study provides the first high-temporal-resolution record of mineral composition in a Greenland ice core over the past 100 years. The results showed substantial variations in mineral composition on multi-decadal and inter-decadal scales, suggesting different geological sources of ice core minerals during different periods. Furthermore, trajectory analysis indicated that mineral transportation in the ice core was influenced by local temperature changes in Greenland.

Dissolved Fe Supply to the Central Gulf of Alaska Is Inferred to Be Derived From Alaskan Glacial Dust That Is Not Resolved by Dust Transport Models

John Crusius

Summary: The re-examination of dissolved iron time-series data from Ocean Station Papa in the central Gulf of Alaska suggests an increase in dissolved iron inventories during autumn and early winter, with Alaskan glacial dust being identified as a likely source. Large dust flux events in the region are caused by anomalous offshore winds and low air temperatures during autumn. Existing global dust models are insufficient in reproducing Alaskan dust flux due to coarse spatial resolution. Future work may include time-series profiles of iron concentrations to confirm this iron source.

Effect of small-scale snow surface roughness on snow albedo and reflectance

Terhikki Manninen et al.

Summary: This study presents a snow surface albedo model considering small-scale surface roughness effects, based on photon recollision probability, which can be combined with existing bulk volume albedo models. The research shows that surface roughness has a greater impact on albedo as the melting season progresses, and it increases backward scattering, particularly for larger solar zenith angle values.

Annual and inter-annual variability and trends of albedo of Icelandic glaciers

Summary: The study focuses on the impact of solar energy absorption and albedo on surface-melt variability for Icelandic glaciers during the melt season. It finds that the albedo for Icelandic glaciers exhibits high annual and inter-annual variability, influenced by climatology, volcanic eruptions, and airborne dust. The results highlight the challenges in accurately parameterizing albedo for glacier surface-melt modeling due to the complex phenomena involved.
