Electrochemiluminescence with semiconductor (nano)materials

Yiran Zhao et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the combination of electrochemiluminescence (ECL) with semiconductor (SC) materials, which has provided new applications and opportunities in (bio)sensing and imaging. The recent advances in generating ECL in original configurations are highlighted, from utilizing bulk SC as electrode materials to using SC nanocrystals or quantum dots as bright ECL nano-emitters. The challenges and future prospects in designing new detection strategies in (bio)analytical chemistry, light-addressable systems, imaging, and infrared devices are also discussed.

Photoluminescence and electrochemiluminescence of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters containing diphenylphosphine chalcogenide-substituted carbazole donors

Shiv Kumar et al.

Summary: In order to develop efficient blue-emitting TADF compounds, derivatives of 2CzPN with electron-accepting groups were synthesized. The results showed that these derivatives shifted the emission wavelength towards blue in polar solvents and matrices. Electrochemiluminescence experiments revealed that some of these derivatives exhibited an unprecedented delayed onset and long emission times, which suggest an organic long-persistent electrochemiluminescence mechanism.

Intense near-infrared electrochemiluminescence facilitated by energy transfer in bimetallic Ir-Ru metallopolymers

Laena D'Alton et al.

Summary: A facile synthesis method of a bimetallic polymer with multiple emissive centers was demonstrated by modifying a partially photolyzed [Ru(bpy)(2)PVP10](2+) with an iridium precursor. The tunable emission color from near-infrared to green by adjusting the ratio of iridium to ruthenium centers was achieved. Transfer of energy between the iridium center and ruthenium centers was observed both in solution-phase and when immobilized as a thin layer, enhancing the electrochemiluminescence properties of the bimetallic polymer.

Molecular engineering towards tunable morphology of metal-organic complex microcrystals for efficient and multicolor electrochemiluminescence

Chun-Yun Ding et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential of molecular engineering in controlling the morphology, emission colors, and ECL properties of molecular crystals. By manipulating the position and number of methyl substituents on the bipyridine ligands, microcrystals of [Ru(bpy)(3)](2+) derivatives with well-defined morphology and varied phosphorescence emission colors can be obtained. These microcrystals show promise as ECL luminophores with superior efficiency and stability for biosensing applications, paving the way for high-performance ECL biosensors and optoelectronic devices.
