Photomodulation of Transmembrane Transport and Potential by Stiff-Stilbene Based Bis(thio)ureas

Sander J. Wezenberg et al.

Summary: Membrane transport proteins have important regulatory functions in biology and can respond to environmental stimuli. Using bis(thio)ureas derived from stiff-stilbene, photocontrol of transmembrane transport and electric potential has been demonstrated through UV-vis and H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The (Z)-isomers show stronger binding properties and are more active in transmembrane transport compared to the (E)-isomers.

Photoresponsive molecular tweezer: Control-release of anions and fluorescence switch

Juhua Leng et al.

Summary: Photoresponsive control-release supramolecular systems have been developed for drug delivery and ion transport, using stiff-stilbenes-based bis-urea as a molecular tweezer to achieve reversible photoisomerization and selective ion recognition and release. This novel system also functions as a photoinduced fluorescence switch, showing potential for optically controlled drug delivery, anion transport regulation, and advanced optical materials.

Push-Pull Stiff-Stilbene: Proton-Gated Visible-Light Photoswitching and Acid-Catalyzed Isomerization

David Villaron et al.

Summary: The donor-acceptor substituted stiff-stilbene molecule undergoes isomerization induced by visible light and the process is inhibited by protonation, which restricts the photochromic properties. Furthermore, the addition of a mild acid triggers fast thermal back-isomerization, providing a new avenue for the stiff-stilbene photoswitches.

Halogen Bonding Tetraphenylethene Anion Receptors: Anion-Induced Emissive Aggregates and Photoswitchable Recognition

Andrew Docker et al.

Summary: A series of TPE derivatives functionalized with perfluoroaryl iodo-triazole halogen bond donors have been reported for anion recognition. These derivatives form luminescent nanoscale aggregates driven by anion coordination, serving as a powerful sensory mechanism for parts per billion concentration chloride sensing. The geometric isomers of these derivatives also act as unprecedented photoswitchable XB donor anion receptors, with the photostationary state composition modulated by the presence of a coordinating halide anion.

Red-shifted tetra-ortho-halo-azobenzenes for photo-regulated transmembrane anion transport

Aidan Kerckhoffs et al.

Summary: A class of photo-responsive synthetic ion transporters for chloride ions was synthesized, with the ability to transport ions across lipid bilayer membranes in response to green or red light. The effects of chlorine/fluorine substitution, positioning of proton receptors, and flexibility of linkers on transport efficiency were explored. Cooperative binding of chloride ions in the Z isomer, but not the E isomer, was observed through NMR titration experiments and molecular dynamics simulations.

A photoswitchable strapped calix[4]pyrrole receptor: highly effective chloride binding and release

David Villaron et al.

Summary: This study presents a Calix[4]pyrrole receptor that can be reversibly switched by light between a strong chloride-binding Z-isomer and a weakly binding E-isomer. The significant difference in binding affinity between the Z- and E-isomer is quantified using H-1 NMR and ITC titrations in MeCN. Structural insights into the photogenerated E-isomer and the chloride-bound receptors are provided through DFT calculations and X-ray crystallographic analysis, offering new prospects for on-demand binding and release in extractions and membrane transport processes.
