Peak Power Estimation of Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries Based on Receding Horizon Control

Binyu Xiong et al.

Summary: This article proposes a new online model-based peak power estimation scheme for vanadium redox flow batteries (VRBs). The scheme accurately estimates the model parameters and system states using recursive least squares with forgetting and unscented Kalman filter. It formulates the peak power estimation as an optimal control problem based on a linear time-varying VRB model and solves it using receding horizon control (RHC). The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is experimentally verified on a 5-kW/3-kWh VRB platform.

Observer design for continuous-time dynamical systems

Pauline Bernard et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the main design techniques of state observer design for continuous-time dynamical systems, which involve algorithms that reconstruct the full information of a dynamical process based on partially measured data. The available methods are classified based on the detectability/observability assumptions they require. The paper shows how each class of observer relies on transforming the system dynamics in a particular normal form, which allows the design of an observer, and how each observability condition guarantees the invertibility of its associated transformation and the convergence of the observer. Finally, some implementation aspects and open problems are briefly discussed.
