Simple multiple reference frame for high-order solution of hovering rotors with and without ground effect

Paulo A. S. F. Silva et al.

Summary: In this study, the aerodynamic performance of the Caradonna and Tung and S-76 helicopters in hover was investigated using a new numerical method. The predictions were compared with experimental data, showing good agreement. The simplified concept of multiple reference frame technique was utilized to define the frame of reference at the solver level, avoiding complex mesh interface handling.

Evaluation of low fidelity and CFD methods for the aerodynamic performance of a small propeller

Eric Vargas Loureiro et al.

Summary: The increasing use of unmanned aerial vehicles and micro air vehicles creates a strong demand for the accurate aerodynamic performance of small-diameters fixed-pitch propellers, which can be analyzed using both low-fidelity methods like blade element momentum theory (BEMT) and high-fidelity methods like computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This study aims to employ these methods to analyze an APC propeller, highlighting the relationship between analysis method choice and Reynolds number, as well as the performance differences at different advance ratio velocities.

Active Interaction Force Control for Contact-Based Inspection With a Fully Actuated Aerial Vehicle

Karen Bodie et al.

Summary: This article introduces and validates active interaction force control and planning for fully actuated and omnidirectional aerial manipulation platforms, aiming to conduct aerial contact inspection in unstructured environments. Experiments demonstrate the system's ability to reject disturbances, perform push-and-slide interactions, and control forces in different flight orientations. The system is validated as a tool for nondestructive testing of concrete infrastructure, with statistical results presented and discussed regarding interaction control performance.

Aerodynamic Interference in Confined Environments with Tilted Propellers: Wall Effect and Corner Effect

A. Garofano-Soldado et al.

Summary: This paper presents several numerical simulations to analyze the aerodynamic performance of tilted rotors, focusing on the wall effect and the corner effect. Two different corner configurations, straight and curved, were considered, along with various tilt angles and distances between the rotor and the wall. Flow field visualization was used to understand the physical behavior of the airflow.
