Cancer statistics, 2022

Rebecca L. Siegel et al.

Summary: Each year, the American Cancer Society compiles data on cancer occurrence and outcomes in the United States. The latest data shows that breast and prostate cancer progress has stagnated, while lung cancer has shown improvements in survival rates. Lung cancer incidence for advanced disease has declined while localized-stage rates have increased, resulting in higher survival rates. Mortality patterns align with incidence trends, with lung cancer deaths declining rapidly, breast cancer deaths slowing, and prostate cancer deaths stabilizing.

Indications and Strategy for Active Surveillance of Adult Low-Risk Papillary Thyroid Microcarcinoma: Consensus Statements from the Japan Association of Endocrine Surgery Task Force on Management for Papillary Thyroid Microcarcinoma

Iwao Sugitani et al.

Summary: The management of patients with low-risk papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC; T1aN0M0) has become an important clinical issue, with the adoption of active surveillance (AS) to avoid overtreatment gradually increasing worldwide. However, not all PTMCs are suitable for AS, and the Japan Association of Endocrine Surgery has produced consensus statements regarding indications and strategies for AS in adult patients diagnosed with low-risk PTMC. These statements provide guidelines for AS and recommend immediate surgery for certain high-risk features in PTMC patients.

Margin Positivity and Survival in Papillary Thyroid Microcarcinoma: A National Cancer Database Analysis

Christina Lee et al.

Summary: This study found that some patients with papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) have aggressive pathological features, and positive microscopic margins are associated with increased risk of death. Treatment at academic centers and higher operative volume are associated with lower rates of margin positivity, which may help improve survival outcomes in PTMC patients.

Thyroid cancer incidence trends by histology in 25 countries: a population-based study

Adalberto Miranda-Filho et al.

Summary: This study analyzed international trends of thyroid cancer incidence by major histological subtypes based on data collected by IARC from 1998 to 2012. The results showed that papillary thyroid cancer was the main contributor and the only subtype that systematically increased in all countries, with large variability between countries.

Clinical importance of high-mannose ,fucosylated, and complex N-glycans in breast cancer metastasis

Klara Scupakova et al.

Summary: The study reveals that N-glycosylation of breast cancer cells changes in a site-specific manner during metastasis, highlighting the clinical significance of high-mannose, fucosylated, and complex N-glycans as potential diagnostic markers and therapeutic targets in metastatic breast cancer.

Distinguishing Benign and Malignant Thyroid Nodules and Identifying Lymph Node Metastasis in Papillary Thyroid Cancer by Plasma N-Glycomics

Zejian Zhang et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively evaluated the plasma N-glycomic changes in patients with TC or BTN for the first time, determining several N-glycan biomarkers with potential for differential diagnosis and risk assessment of lymph node metastasis. These findings enhance the understanding of TC.

Diagnostic Potential of Plasma IgG N-glycans in Discriminating Thyroid Cancer from Benign Thyroid Nodules and Healthy Controls

Zejian Zhang et al.

Summary: Novel biomarkers are urgently needed to distinguish between benign and malignant thyroid nodules and detect thyroid cancer in the early stage. The associations between serum IgG N-glycosylation and thyroid cancer risk have been revealed. Our results suggest that derived trait BN and the classification glyco-panel may serve as candidate biomarkers for further validation, showing accurate performance in discriminating thyroid cancer from benign thyroid nodules and healthy controls.
