Electro-optical π-radicals: design advances, applications and future perspectives

Petri Murto et al.

Summary: This review discusses the classification and design of neutral pi-radicals and their impact on electro-optical properties and various applications. The factors such as radical center, steric effects, extent of conjugation, delocalization, and additional electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups synergistically influence the stability, electronic structure, energetics, intra- and intermolecular spin-spin interactions, as well as the charge transport, optical, and magnetic properties of pi-radicals. The review provides examples of controlling these properties and utilizing reported materials in optics and electronics applications. It also addresses future potentials and research directions, highlighting the remaining challenges that require critical consideration.

An Open-shell, Luminescent, Two-Dimensional Coordination Polymer with a Honeycomb Lattice and Triangular Organic Radical

Shun Kimura et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel triangular organic radical, tris(3,5-dichloro-4-pyridyl)methyl radical (trisPyM), was synthesized and used to form stable 2D coordination polymers with luminescent and high photostability properties. The complexation of trisPyM with Zn-II resulted in the formation of a honeycomb lattice with graphene-like spin topology. This radical demonstrates better chemical stability and luminescent properties compared to conventional radicals, making it a promising building block for new 2D coordination polymers with unique properties.

Expansion of Photostable Luminescent Radicals by Meta-Substitution

Yohei Hattori et al.

Summary: The synthesis and fluorescence properties of polychlorinated pyridyldiphenylmethyl radicals with substituents meta to the alpha-carbon have been studied. Different substituents showed varied effects on the fluorescence behavior of the radicals in different solvents. DFT calculations revealed that the fluorescence properties were related to the nature of the excited states of the radicals.

Theoretical investigation of aromaticity and charge transfer in emission process of triarylmethyl radicals as OLED materials

Shenglong Sang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the structures and electron transition behaviors of four different types of triarylmethyl radicals, revealing correlations between spin density and torsion angle, reliable emission energy predictions, and insights into interfragment charge transfer behavior. The evaluation of aromaticity through NICS(1)zz and the correlation between NICS(1)zz values and emission wavelength provide valuable information for emission spectra prediction and molecular design.
