Targeted creation of new mutants with compact plant architecture using CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing by an optimized genetic transformation procedure in cucurbit plants

Tongxu Xin et al.

Summary: In this study, an efficient genetic transformation system for melon and squash was established using an optimal infiltration intensity strategy. The power of this method was harnessed to create alleles that resulted in a compact plant architecture with shorter internodes in melon, squash, and cucumber.

Genome-wide association analysis provides molecular insights into natural variation in watermelon seed size

Chengsheng Gong et al.

Summary: In this study, the variation and genetic mechanism of watermelon seed size were investigated. The results showed strong correlations among different seed size traits and revealed the importance of seed enlargement during domestication. Several significant SNPs associated with seed size were identified, and potential molecular markers for breeding watermelon cultivars with desired seed size were proposed. Furthermore, genes that may regulate seed size were also identified. This study provides valuable molecular insights into natural variation in watermelon seed size and has implications for molecular marker-assisted breeding.

Grain Size Associated Genes and the Molecular Regulatory Mechanism in Rice

Hongzhen Jiang et al.

Summary: Grain size is an important trait in rice, controlled by multiple genes. Recent studies have identified several genes/QTL related to grain size through cloning and association analysis, revealing the regulation mechanism. These findings provide theoretical basis for improving rice yield and breeding superior varieties.

Genome-Wide Identification of YABBY Gene Family in Cucurbitaceae and Expression Analysis in Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.)

Shuai Yin et al.

Summary: YABBY transcription factors play important roles in plant growth and development. In this study, 59 YABBY genes were identified from eight cucurbit species, and they were clustered into five subfamilies with conserved gene structures and motifs. The YABBY genes exhibited organ-specific expression patterns in cucumber, and one of the genes may play a crucial role in cucumber fruit development.

Functional conservation of the grapevine candidate gene INNER NO OUTER for ovule development and seed formation

Valentina di Rienzo et al.

Summary: This study focused on the Vitis vinifera INNER NO OUTER (INO) gene as a candidate for seedless fruit production, based on an interesting case of seedless fruit production in the Annona squamosa crop species. The VviINO gene was found to play a crucial role in the formation of ovule outer integument and seed set, with similar activity and protein targets in grapevine as in Arabidopsis. The findings have potential implications for grapevine breeding.

Restriction of iron loading into developing seeds by a YABBY transcription factor safeguards successful reproduction in Arabidopsis

Li Sun et al.

Summary: The YABBY transcription factor INNER NO OUTER (INO) in Arabidopsis regulates iron accumulation in seeds by repressing the expression of NRAMP1, a transporter that contributes to seed loading. Reduced expression of INO leads to higher iron accumulation in seeds, while overexpression results in oxidative damage and cell death in developing seeds. This study highlights the important role of INO in safeguarding reproduction by controlling iron loading into developing seeds.
