Microbially-mediated synthesis of activated carbon derived from cottonseed husks for enhanced sulfanilamide removal

Tiantian Xu et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel method to develop activated carbon with improved adsorption performance through fungal pretreatment of the feedstock. The growth of Pleurotus ostreatus on cottonseed husks resulted in advantageous pore size for the production of porous carbon. The activated carbons derived from cottonseed husks showed exceptional adsorption capacity for sulfanilamide compared to commercial activated carbon. The adsorption mechanism involved pore filling, hydrogen-bond formation, and 7C-7C staking interactions. The presence of a microporous-mesoporous structure, stronger hydrophilicity, and more functional groups due to the decomposition of lignocellulose in the plant wall greatly enhanced the adsorption process. The activated carbons exhibited wide pH adaptability and resilience to interference from water impurities in actual wastewater treatment.

Sulfonamides differing in the alkylamino substituent length-Synthesis, electrochemical characteristic, acid-base profile and complexation properties

Aleksandra Ciesielska et al.

Summary: Two sulfonamide derivatives with different alkylamino substituents (NethylS and NpropylS) were synthesized and extensively studied for their structure and physicochemical properties. The complete spectroscopic and electrochemical profiles of the compounds were determined, along with their assignment of ionic species. The electrochemical characteristics of the sulfonamides were investigated in both aqueous and aprotic solvents using cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. The effect of pH on the redox processes and spectroscopic properties of NethylS/NpropylS was also examined. The activity of the sulfonamide antibiotics was confirmed by forming complexes with d-block metal ions, and the complexing properties and stability constants of NethylS and NpropylS with ruthenium(III) and rhodium(III) ions were determined.
