Using HPLC-MS/MS to Assess the Quality of Beet, Mizuna, Lettuce and Corn Salad after Juglone and Walnut Leaf Extract Treatments

Aljaz Medic et al.

Summary: This study investigated the response of four vegetable crops to treatments with juglone and walnut leaf extract at concentrations found in walnut orchards. It was found that Beta vulgaris and Lactuca sativa were less susceptible to juglone, while Brassica rapa and Valerianella locusta showed lower yields and reduced quality. The study also explored the influence of allelochemicals on metabolomics and the uptake of phenolic compounds beneficial to human health.

Comparative Evaluation of Juices from Red-Fleshed Apples after Production with Different Dejuicing Systems and Subsequent Storage

Annette Wagner et al.

Summary: This study investigated the juice production of red-fleshed 'Weirouge' apples using the innovative spiral filter press technology in an oxygen-reduced atmosphere. The results showed that the spiral filter pressed juices had a more brilliant red color and significantly higher amounts of oxidation-sensitive constituents compared to juices produced with conventional systems. The differences in color and phenolic compounds between the juices produced with different pressing systems were maintained during storage, suggesting that the spiral filter press is a promising technology for the production of juices with better color and retention of oxidation-sensitive constituents.

Metabolomic Characterization of Commercial, Old, and Red-Fleshed Apple Varieties

Adriana Teresa Ceci et al.

Summary: This study investigated the correlation between single polyphenolic compounds in apple pulp and quality characteristics, such as antioxidant activity and content of phenolic compounds and anthocyanins in apple skin. Results showed that parameters measured in old apple varieties were higher than in commercial and red-fleshed varieties, with variable profiles of flavan-3-ols and anthocyanins amongst commercial and red-fleshed varieties. The PLS method revealed the highest coefficients of determination in prediction for compounds quantified in old cultivars.

Spatial and Temporal Enhancement of Colour Development in Apples Subjected to Reflective Material in the Southern Hemisphere

Kerstin Funke et al.

Summary: This study investigated the possibility of enhancing apple colouration using reflective mulch under diffuse light conditions in the Southern Hemisphere. The results showed that just two weeks of exposure to the mulch was sufficient to significantly improve fruit colouration, increasing the proportion of fruit meeting market standards and improving fruit storability and export quality.
