The chemical evolution of solid electrolyte interface in sodium metal batteries

Lina Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) in sodium metal batteries (SMBs) and explores the protection effect of SEI derived from NaDFOB. In situ nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) reveals that the prior reduction of DFOB anion contributes to SEI formation and suppresses solvent decomposition. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and solid-state NMR show that the DFOB anion gradually transforms into borate and fluoride-rich SEI with cycling. The optimum protection effect of SEI is achieved at 50 cycles, tripling the lifespan of SMBs.

In Situ Electrochemical Derivation of Sodium-Tin Alloy as Sodium-Ion Energy Storage Devices Anode with Overall Electrochemical Characteristics

Liangfeng Niu et al.

Summary: Inspired by the fermentation process, this study utilized the expansion of tin foil with sodium rings to achieve the formation of sodium-tin alloy anode and improve sodium storage characteristics. The design of Sn foil inlaid with Na ring allowed for the electrochemical formation of fluffy porous sodium-tin alloy, which alleviated volume expansion and inhibited the generation of sodium dendrites. The sodium ions provided by the Na metal ring compensated for the active sodium components consumed during the repeated formation of SEI, resulting in high specific capacity and cycle stability in sodium-ion energy storage devices.

Effect of fluoroethylene carbonate and vinylene carbonate additives on full-cell optimization of Li-ion capacitors

Seongki Ahn et al.

Summary: The study found that the use of fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) increased internal resistance and decreased the cyclability of LIC full-cells, while LICs with vinylene carbonate (VC) additives exhibited good cyclability over 4000 cycles due to the presence of polymeric species in the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). This detailed investigation into the function of SEI compounds derived from VC additives and their effect on cyclability will provide new insights into optimizing LIC full-cell configurations with appropriate electrolyte additives.

The effect of growth temperature on the process of insertion/extraction of sodium into germanium nanowires formed by electrodeposition using indium nanoparticles

I. M. Gavrilin et al.

Summary: The morphology and electrochemical performances of germanium nanowires in sodium-ion batteries are dependent on solution temperatures. The core-shell structure of the nanowires, determined by the solution temperature, plays a crucial role in the Na insertion/extraction processes.

High-rate and low-temperature performance of germanium nanowires anode for lithium-ion batteries

I. M. Gavrilin et al.

Summary: The original version of a negative electrode of lithium-ion battery was prepared, investigating the influence of electrodeposition of Ge nanowires at different current densities on their electrochemical performance. The results show that the nanowires exhibit good specific capacity at 1C and 4C rates, as well as decent performance at low temperatures.
