Assessing species coverage and assembly quality of rapidly accumulating sequenced genomes

Romain Feron et al.

Summary: This study presents an automated analysis workflow that surveys and assesses the completeness of genome assemblies from the phylum Arthropoda at the NCBI, and compiles the results into an interactively browsable resource. By using this resource, taxonomic coverage and assembly quality can be examined, and results from different datasets can be compared.

Database resources of the National Center for Biotechnology Information

Eric W. Sayers et al.

Summary: The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) offers a wide range of online resources for biological information and data, including GenBank (R) nucleic acid sequence database and PubMed (R) database of citations and abstracts. Entrez system allows search and retrieval operations for most of these data, with E-utilities serving as the programming interface. Additional resources such as PMC, Bookshelf, Genome Data Viewer, SRA, ClinVar, dbSNP, dbVar, Pathogen Detection, BLAST, Primer-BLAST, IgBLAST, iCn3D, and PubChem are also accessible through the NCBI home page.

Horseshoe crab genomes reveal the evolution of genes and microRNAs after three rounds of whole genome duplication

Wenyan Nong et al.

Summary: The study reveals that horseshoe crabs have undergone three rounds of WGD, shedding light on the diverse fates of coding and noncoding genes. It provides insights into the evolutionary consequences of WGD events on genes and microRNAs at both the individual and population level. Additionally, improved genomic resources are offered for horseshoe crabs, valuable for breeding programs and conservation efforts.

Long Reads Are Revolutionizing 20 Years of Insect Genome Sequencing

Scott Hotaling et al.

Summary: The insect genome research has made significant progress over the past 20 years, but there is still bias in the genome assembly of insect species. Assemblies incorporating long-read sequencing technology are significantly more contiguous than those that do not, and future efforts to build insect genome resources require better integration, balanced sampling, and improved gene annotations.

The USDA-ARS Ag100Pest Initiative: High-Quality Genome Assemblies for Agricultural Pest Arthropod Research

Anna K. Childers et al.

Summary: High-quality genome assemblies are crucial for modern biological research, and advancements in sequencing methods have made it possible to sequence and assemble many insect genomes at scale. The Ag100Pest Initiative aims to assemble reference-quality genomes of important arthropod pest species to advance agricultural research. The project has already made progress in assembling genomes of multiple species and has expanded the original goal to include a total of 158 species in the pipeline.
