Structure Evolution of Graphitic Surface upon Oxidation: Insights by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy

Shaoxian Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the structure of epoxy clusters formed during oxidation was determined using a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope operating at 4 K. The experimental data was quantitatively verified by the van der Waals density functional theory. Three distinct nanostructures corresponding to three stages of evolution of vacancy defects were found. It was observed that epoxy trimers minimize the energy in the cyclic structure, and they grow into honeycomb superstructures to form larger clusters. Vacancy defects only evolve in the larger clusters in the middle of the cluster, indicating the role of lattice strain in the generation of vacancies. Semiquinone groups were also present at the carbon edge in the vacancy defects. Heating the clusters to 800 degrees C resulted in the loss of the entire epoxy population and the formation of cluster-free vacancy defects, indicating reversible functionalization of epoxy groups.

Centimeter-scale gas-sieving nanoporous single-layer graphene membrane

Wan-Chi Lee et al.

Summary: Reinforced graphene membranes with a two-layer composite carbon film successfully prevent crack formation during gas separation, ensuring mechanical strength and avoiding cracks at centimeter scales. The hierarchical pore structure in the composite carbon film plays a crucial role in achieving gas-sieving graphene membranes.

Rapid Gas Transport from Block-Copolymer Templated Nanoporous Carbon Films

Mostapha Dakhchoune et al.

Summary: The study investigates nanoporous carbon (NPC) films derived from the pyrolysis of phase-separated blockcopolymer/turanose films, showing a perforated lamellar (PL) nanostructure with an interlamellar spacing of approximately 2 nm. Gas transport through the NPC film primarily occurs in the Knudsen regime, leading to rapid gas transport with high H-2 permeance and selectivity over a temperature range of 25-300 degrees C. These properties make the NPC film a promising membrane support and mechanical reinforcement for high-permeance two-dimensional membranes for gas separation.
