Parallel transport dynamics for mixed quantum states with applications to time-dependent density functional theory

Dong An et al.

Summary: Direct simulation of general quantum states using the von Neumann dynamics is expensive. By generalizing the parallel transport dynamics to general quantum states, we propose an improved method that enhances simulation efficiency and time step size.

Ab Initio Prediction of a Negative Barkas Coefficient for Slow Protons and Antiprotons in LiF

Xixi Qi et al.

Summary: In this study, we report the prediction of a negative Barkas effect in lithium fluoride (LiF) insulator, where the stopping power of antiprotons is found to be greater than that of protons. We attribute this phenomenon to the destabilization of a specific p orbital of the F- anion by slow encountering antiprotons.

Entropy-Preserving and Entropy-Stable Relaxation IMEX and Multirate Time-Stepping Methods

Shinhoo Kang et al.

Summary: In this paper, we propose entropy-preserving and entropy-stable partitioned Runge-Kutta methods that mitigate system stiffness and fully support entropy-preserving and entropy-stability properties at a discrete level. By adjusting the step completion and introducing a relaxation parameter, the proposed methods satisfy the discrete entropy condition. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of these methods.

Christopher Shepard et al.

Summary: This article provides a perspective on simulating electronic excitation and dynamics using the real-time propagation approach to time-dependent density functional theory in the plane-wave pseudopotential formulation. Recent developments and challenges in implementing RT-TDDFT in various numerical formalisms are discussed, with an emphasis on studying real systems numerically. Applications of RT-TDDFT simulation are highlighted to showcase its utility in studying electronic excitation and dynamics phenomena.

Plasmon Couplings from Subsystem Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory

Giulia Giannone et al.

Summary: In plasmonics, theoretical analysis of the coupling between metallic nanoparticles or between an emitter and metallic nanoparticles is crucial for designing new systems. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) considers quantum and spill-out effects, but the subsystem formulation of TD-DFT allows for direct computation of plasmon couplings and analysis of charge-transfer effects. This approach can reproduce reference calculations and is useful for both gap distances greater than 6 angstrom and hybrid plasmonic systems.

Anomalous Stopping and Charge Transfer in Proton-Irradiated Graphene

Alina Kononov et al.

Summary: Using first-principles calculations, the study uncovers and explains a new type of anomalous low-velocity stopping effect in proton-irradiated graphene, attributing it to enhanced electron capture from sigma- and pi-orbitals. The analysis of electron emission suggests that backward emission is more sensitive to proton trajectory, potentially leading to higher contrast images in ion microscopy. For slow protons, a steep drop in emission is observed, consistent with predictions from analytical models.

Real-Time Exciton Dynamics with Time-Dependent Density-Functional Theory

Jiuyu Sun et al.

Summary: Linear-response time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT) can accurately describe excitonic features in the optical spectra of insulators and semiconductors. By utilizing real-time TDDFT, it is possible to model excitons and study femtosecond exciton dynamics following short-pulse excitations, with potential extensions into the nonlinear regime.

Direct treatment of interaction between laser-field and electrons for simulating laser processing of metals

Yoshiyuki Miyamoto

Summary: A numerical simulation method based on time-dependent density functional theory was used to study laser-induced volume expansion on Cu(111) and Ni(111) surfaces. It was found that the Ni slab expanded more than the Cu slab under the same laser pulse conditions, despite Ni having a smaller thermal expansion coefficient than Cu. The threshold fluence for releasing surface Cu atoms from the Ni slab was comparable to experimental results.

Electron cascades and secondary electron emission in graphene under energetic ion irradiation

Henrique Vazquez et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that under high-energy ion impact, electronic excitation in graphene can result in secondary electron emission, leading to a decrease in energy within the graphene layer. The probability of electron capture decreases rapidly with increasing ion velocity, with secondary electron emission dominating in the high-velocity regime.

Time-dependent orbital-free density functional theory: Background and Pauli kernel approximations

Kaili Jiang et al.

Summary: Time-dependent orbital-free density functional theory is an efficient method for calculating dynamic properties of large-scale quantum systems. The method involves mapping the real system of interacting fermions onto a fictitious system of noninteracting bosons, with key ingredients being the dynamic Pauli potential and associated kernel. The proposed frequency-dependent Pauli kernel shows promising results for improving the accuracy of orbital-free DFT simulations for nanoscale systems.
