Understanding upper water mass dynamics in the Gulf of Mexico by linking physical and biogeochemical features

Gabriela Yareli Cervantes-Diaz et al.

Summary: This study improves the understanding of water mass dynamics by including biogeochemical data, particularly when thermohaline characteristics overlap. Water masses in the Gulf of Mexico are mainly affected by mesoscale processes and local evaporation, with proposed boundaries instrumental in clarifying the dynamics of surface waters.

The Dissolution Rate of CaCO3 in the Ocean

Jess F. Adkins et al.

Summary: The dissolution of CaCO3 minerals in the ocean is a fundamental aspect of marine alkalinity and carbon cycling, but there is still disagreement regarding the relationship between dissolution rate and mineral saturation state. While freshwater dissolution of calcite has been well studied, a unified understanding of carbonate dissolution in the ocean is lacking, with disagreements between laboratory and field studies. This review proposes a new framework that considers surface energetics and seawater speciation to explain recent data and historical features.

Microbial sulfate reduction and organic sulfur formation in sinking marine particles

M. R. Raven et al.

Summary: Climate change is expanding marine oxygen-deficient zones, impacting global cycles and organic carbon storage. Research shows that microbial sulfate reduction may enhance organic carbon preservation in sediments, serving as a stabilizing feedback under anoxic conditions.

Temperature controls carbon cycling and biological evolution in the ocean twilight zone

Evaluation of the Performance of CMIP6 Models in Reproducing Rainfall Patterns over North Africa

Hassen Babaousmail et al.

Summary: This study assessed the performance of CMIP6 models in reproducing the spatial and temporal rainfall variability over North Africa. Results showed that some models slightly over/underestimated the rainfall in dry/wet months, with the ensemble of best performing models outperforming individual models.

Assessment of C, N, and Si Isotopes as Tracers of Past Ocean Nutrient and Carbon Cycling

J. R. Farmer et al.

Summary: Biological productivity in the ocean affects the distribution of carbon between the atmosphere and ocean, with stable isotope analysis providing insights into carbon and nutrient cycling, as well as their relationship with biological productivity and global climate. This review examines the potential of stable isotope measurements in sedimentary records to reconstruct past ocean carbon and nutrient cycling, highlighting opportunities for future research and addressing uncertainties and limitations in using these proxies to understand changes in the oceans and climate system.

ENSO phase-locking behavior in climate models: from CMIP5 to CMIP6

Minghong Liu et al.

Summary: The phase-locking behavior of ENSO in CMIP6 models shows a significant improvement compared to CMIP5, with more models accurately reproducing the locking-month and improved sharpness. The locking-month is highly corresponding to the phase of seasonal modulation of ENSO's instabilities, while sharpness is mainly controlled by the intensity of this modulation and noise. Models with an exaggerated semi-annual variation of ENSO's instabilities poorly simulate the ENSO phase-locking, without improvement from CMIP5 to CMIP6.

An observation-based evaluation and ranking of historical Earth system model simulations in the northwest North Atlantic Ocean

Arnaud Laurent et al.

Summary: The study compared the abilities of global Earth System Models (ESMs) and a regional biogeochemical model in reproducing observations on the continental shelf. It found that most ESMs performed poorly compared to observations, while the regional model showed higher spatial resolution and accuracy than ESMs. Eleven ESMs were deemed satisfactory for use in the NWA region.
