Summary: This study identified the main degradation mechanism of AA in the UV/H2O2 advanced oxidation process through quantum chemistry and experimental methods. Radical addition reactions dominate the center dot OH-initiated AA reaction, and the interaction between AA and the surface model of soil particles is weak. The removal rate of AA from aqueous and heterogeneous systems reached around 62% within 2 hours.

Temperature-dependent profiles of dioxin-like toxicants from combustion of brominated flame retardants

Mohammednoor Altarawneh

Summary: This study constructed a chemical kinetic model to explain the homogeneous gas-phase emission of Br-aromatic pollutants from the oxidative thermal decomposition of a monobromobenzene molecule. The model predicts the temperature-dependent profiles of PBDD/Fs isomers and the highest abundance of Br dioxin-like compounds in a narrow temperature window. By providing insight into the potential emission inventories of Br-compounds in the gas phase, the model allows for a survey and fine-tuning of operational conditions to reduce the emission of Br-notorious pollutants.

Theoretical insights into the degradation of swep by hydroxyl radicals in atmosphere and water environment: Mechanisms, kinetics and toxicity

Zexiu An et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the degradation mechanisms and kinetics of swep in atmosphere and water environments mediated by HO center dot. The predominant reaction type was found to be HO center dot-addition reaction, leading to the formation of degradation products that were in good agreement with experimental results. The total rate constants of swep with HO center dot were determined, and it was shown that the degradation induced by HO center dot was beneficial to the survival of aquatic organisms.

Mixed oxidation of aqueous nonylphenol and triclosan by thermally activated persulfate: Reaction kinetics and formation of co-oligomerization products

Yumeng Qi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mixed elimination of aqueous nonylphenol (NP) and triclosan (TCS) in a thermally activated persulfate system. It was found that the presence of TCS enhanced the conversion of NP, while NP hindered the degradation of TCS. A total of 23 intermediates were identified, with the dominant route being a single-electron coupling reaction induced by (OH)-O-center dot. These findings provide useful information for the elimination of mixed endocrine disrupting chemicals in water and wastewater.

Summary: The oxidation mechanisms and ecotoxicity of BDE-153, along with the assessment of reaction kinetics in both gas and aqueous phases, were investigated using quantum chemical methods. The results showed that the transformation products remain toxic to aquatic organisms, and total rate constants and half-lives were evaluated at suitable temperature and pressure conditions. Solvent models were also used to examine the solvent effect on total reactions. These findings provide insights into the transformation mechanism, atmospheric fate, and ecotoxicity of BDE-153, laying a foundation for experimental and industrial applications.

Yan Wang et al.

Summary: The aqueous oxidative degradation mechanism of three forms of ciprofloxacin was investigated using density functional theory calculations, revealing hydrogen abstraction pathways as the most favorable. Sulfate radicals were found to be stronger oxidants compared to hydroxyl radicals, with piperazine ring cleavage being the main pathway. Water molecules and dissolved oxygen were shown to play significant roles in the oxidative degradation of ciprofloxacin.
