Persistence, environmental hazards, and mitigation of pharmaceutically active residual contaminants from water matrices

Reyna Berenice Gonzalez-Gonzalez et al.

Summary: Pharmaceutical compounds can elicit biological reactions in non-specific organisms in addition to the specific organisms they are designed for. Researchers worldwide are studying the potential human health hazards and environmental effects associated with these compounds in aquatic environments. The presence of these pharmaceutically active compounds in various environmental matrices has categorized them as emerging contaminants. Due to their resistance and the inefficiency of current wastewater treatment methods, novel wastewater remediation technologies, such as microbes assisted bioremediation, are urgently needed.

Transformation of sulfadiazine in humic acid and polystyrene microplastics solution by horseradish peroxidase coupled with 1-hydroxybenzotriazole

Yifei Leng et al.

Summary: Enzyme catalyzed coupling with redox mediators, specifically horseradish peroxidase (HRP) with 1-hydroxybenzotriazole (HBT), was effective in transforming sulfadiazine (SDZ) under varying conditions. The transformation efficiency was influenced by the presence of Ca2+ ions and different types of particles, such as humic acid (HA) and polystyrene (PS) microplastics, which acted as inhibitors. The competitive effect between cations and SDZ was observed, with divalent cations (Ca2+) showing greater competitiveness than monovalent ones (Na+).
