International Medical Graduate Resident Wellness: Examining Qualitative Data From J-1 Visa Physician Recipients

Hilary A. Symes et al.

Summary: This study identified the wellness barriers and challenges faced by international medical graduates (IMGs) as they transitioned to residency programs in the United States. The findings showed that IMGs encountered challenges related to cultural differences, healthcare system, distance from family and friends, bureaucratic barriers, and language/communication and finances. Additionally, the study highlighted the importance of friendships/relationships, exercise, family, socialization, and healthy eating for the wellness of IMGs.

Assessment of Discrimination, Bias, and Inclusion in a United States Hematology and Oncology Fellowship Program

Rahma M. Warsame et al.

Summary: This study interviewed hematology and oncology fellows to understand their experiences of discrimination and inclusion in graduate medical education. The findings revealed common discriminatory behaviors towards trainees, with themes including gender role-typing, perception of futility of reporting, diversity and inclusion, and coping strategies. The anonymous hotline methodology provided a safe space for trainees to have candid discussions, suggesting that GME programs should assess bias and inclusivity anonymously to better support trainees.

Primary Care Shortage in Medically Underserved and Health Provider Shortage Areas: Lessons from Delaware, USA

Srikrishna Varun Malayala et al.

Summary: The number of primary care physicians in Delaware providing direct patient care decreased by about 6% from 2013 to 2018. The average wait time to see a primary care physician increased from 8.2 days in 1998 to 23.5 days in 2018. Nearly half of physicians serving in Delaware's Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs) are international medical graduates (IMGs) recruited through the J1 VISA waiver program. 80% of these IMGs are considering leaving the United States due to concerns about physician immigration policies, primarily the immigration backlog.
