Sub-3 nm Ultrafine Cu2O for Visible Light Driven Nitrogen Fixation

Shuai Zhang et al.

Summary: This study reports the successful synthesis of uniformly sized and ultrafine Cu2O platelets, which exhibit excellent performance and stability for the visible light driven photocatalytic reduction of N-2 to NH3. The high activity is attributed to long-lived photoexcited electrons in trap states, an abundance of exposed active sites, and the underlying support structure.

Synthesis of copper nanoparticles with controllable crystallinity and their photothermal property

Jie Wang et al.

Summary: Copper nanoparticles of about 80 nm in diameter were successfully prepared in aqueous solution by reducing copper salts with sodium hypophosphite in the presence of hydrochloric acid and polyacrylamide as the capping agent. The presence of H+ facilitated the formation of Cu nanoparticles, while the crystallinity of the nanoparticles was highly dependent on the Cl- concentration. The resulting Cu-PVA hydrogel demonstrated significant photothermal conversion efficiency and bacterial killing efficiency under laser irradiation.

Self-similar mesocrystals form via interface-driven nucleation and assembly

Guomin Zhu et al.

Summary: Crystallization by particle attachment (CPA) is a common mechanism in colloidal crystallization that can produce nanomaterials with hierarchical morphologies. Oriented attachment, a form of CPA, results in mesocrystals that diffract as single crystals, although the constituent particles are still discernible.

Unprecedented Ag-Cu2O composited mesocrystals with efficient charge separation and transfer as well as visible light harvesting for enhanced photocatalytic activity

Shaodong Sun et al.

Summary: Mesocrystals with highly ordered subunits offer good charge transfer tunnels and active sites for catalytic reactions. The construction of mesocrystals in nanocomposites has been a challenge, but a new wet chemical strategy was developed to prepare plate-like Ag-Cu2O composited mesocrystals without organic capping agents. The resulting Ag-Cu2O CMCs showed superior photocatalytic performance due to their crystallographic orientation, Schottky barrier, and localized surface plasmon resonance.

Formation of magnesium calcite mesocrystals in the inorganic environment only by using Ca2+ and Mg2+ and its biological implications

Li-Mei Shang et al.

Summary: This study reports a facile method to synthesize corn-like Mg-calcite mesocrystals using only Ca2+ and Mg2+ from pure ACC. The resulting mesocrystals consist of many nanocubes with common crystallographic orientation, displaying excellent single crystal features. In the crystallization process, ACC nanospheres rapidly agglomerate into Mg-calcite corn-like mesocrystals through oriented attachment in a certain direction, shedding new light on the role of seawater in the formation of biological Mg-calcite.

Studies on the substrate-dependent photocatalytic properties of Cu2O heterojunctions

Riza Ariyani Nur Khasanah et al.

Summary: Cu2O is a promising material for photocatalysis due to its absorption ability in the UV-visible light range, functioning as a photocathode when deposited on conductive Ti and FTO substrates, and as a photoanode when deposited on n-type semiconductors like TiO2 nanotube arrays. The photocatalytic properties of Cu2O heterojunctions on different substrates were systematically studied, showing that Cu2O/TNA/Ti exhibited higher photocurrent spectral responses compared to Cu2O/Ti and Cu2O/FTO photocathodes. The enhancement of photocatalytic activity in Cu2O/TNA/Ti was attributed to its UV-visible light absorption capabilities.
