Valorisation of watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) rind waste into bioethanol: an optimization and kinetic studies

M. A. Kassim et al.

Summary: The study examined the impact of fermentation operating parameters on bioethanol production from watermelon rind waste. It was found that high bioethanol yields could be achieved under specific conditions. Using mathematical models, the growth kinetics of yeast during fermentation process were successfully described. The results provide valuable information for further development of bioethanol production processes.

Consumer acceptance of watermelon flesh-rind blends and the effect of rind on refreshing perception

Jessica Louise Ramirez et al.

Summary: This study found that blending watermelon flesh with rind up to 20% was acceptable to consumers, with the addition of rind affecting the refreshing perception. Excessive green notes, off flavors, and undesirable texture from the rind may decrease overall liking and refreshing ratings of the samples.

Screening of the volatile compounds in fresh and thermally treated watermelon juice via headspace-gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry and comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-olfactory-mass spectrometry analysis

Fan Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, volatile compounds in fresh and thermally treated watermelon juices were analyzed using HS-GC-IMS and GC x GC-O-MS, identifying new compounds and confirming aroma profiles. Differential analysis with Volcano plot and heat-mapping allowed for efficient discrimination of the juices based on off-flavor contribution.

Modelling the Extraction of Pectin towards the Valorisation of Watermelon Rind Waste

Daniel Alexander Mendez et al.

Summary: This study utilized an experimental design to investigate the impact of extraction parameters on watermelon rind pectin, resulting in the discovery of novel compositional features and the potential to produce customized pectin ingredients with wider application scope. Optimum conditions yielded WRP with comparable purity and molar mass but higher branching degree compared to traditional pectin sources. Different extraction conditions generated pectin structures with varying characteristics.

Using watermelon rind and nitrite-containing wastewater for electricity production in a membraneless biocathode microbial fuel cell

Yunlong Yang et al.

Summary: Using watermelon rind waste and nitrite-containing wastewater as substrates, a study found that a membraneless biocathode microbial fuel cell (MB-MFC) can generate electricity with potential feasibility. The main findings include the rapid fermentation of watermelon rind to organic acids, dominant microbial genera in cathodic and anodic biofilms, and the cooperation of microbes in electricity production and nitrite conversion. Key genes involved in nitrite reduction were also identified.
