Understanding the impacts of predecessor rain events on flood hazard in a changing climate

Amina Khatun et al.

Summary: This study investigates the physical association between Predecessor Rain Events (PREs) and peak runoff generation in seven catchments over the Upper Mahanadi River basin (UMRB), India. By developing a statistical-dynamical framework, the study assesses the compounding impact of PREs versus riverine floods during both retrospective and projected climate. The results show an increase in compound flood hazard in larger catchments during the projected period when considering PRE as the covariate.

A multi-hazard framework for spatial-temporal impact analysis

Silvia De Angeli et al.

Summary: This paper presents a five-step conceptual framework for analyzing the impacts of multi-hazard interactions on the built environment. The framework is based on the systematic analysis of spatial and temporal evolution of hazards to identify potential impact interactions. It is applicable to a wide range of hazards and considers both hazard and impact interactions, as well as residual damage and recovery processes.

Spatiotemporal dependence of soil moisture and precipitation over India

J. Ashish Manoj et al.

Summary: Anthropogenic climate change has had a significant impact on the global water cycle, and there is a growing consensus that extreme precipitation events will increase in the future. However, an increase in extreme precipitation does not necessarily mean a higher flood risk, as it depends on the conditions before the storm. Previous studies on the relationship between soil moisture and precipitation were limited by the direct trivial relationship between the two, highlighting the need for a better understanding of their direction and dynamic interdependency. This study used Event Coincidence Analysis to identify and quantify the influence of soil moisture anomalies on extreme precipitation events. The results showed a high coincidence rate in flash flood-prone areas in India, indicating a strong coupling between soil moisture and precipitation. These findings demonstrate the applicability of the analysis method in characterizing the spatiotemporal patterns of soil moisture-precipitation dependence in India.

A Copula-Based Multivariate Probability Analysis for Flash Flood Risk under the Compound Effect of Soil Moisture and Rainfall

Ming Zhong et al.

Summary: This study explores the use of copula function approach for joint probability analyses of flash flood risks, considering the combined effects of soil moisture and rainfall indexes. The results showed that the probability of flash floods increased with increasing risk parameter thresholds, and the return periods of bivariate joint distribution were smaller than those of multivariate joint distribution. Additionally, the occurrence probability of flash floods is higher in regions with higher maximum 1-hour rainfall, when peak flow and soil moisture are fixed.

Potential impact of flooding on schistosomiasis in Poyang Lake regions based on multi-source remote sensing images

Jing-Bo Xue et al.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of flooding on the transmission risk of intestinal schistosomiasis, and found potential snail habitats concentrated in the marshlands around Poyang Lake after flooding. Areas with a high risk of schistosomiasis transmission were mainly distributed in Yongxiu, Xinjian, Yugan, and Poyang.

Compound flooding from lake seiche and river flow in a freshwater coastal river

Angshuman M. Saharia et al.

Summary: The study examines the compound impacts of seiche and high flow on flooding in freshwater coastal rivers, finding that they can lead to extreme flood risks. The use of Copula joint distribution and hydrodynamic modeling allows for the prediction of water levels and the development of flood probability maps.
