Designing novel magnesium oxysulfate cement for stabilization/solidification of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash

Lei Wang et al.

Summary: An innovative magnesium oxysulfate cement binder was designed for stabilization/solidification of MSWI fly ash, showing excellent immobilization efficiencies for Pb and As. The study found that reactive Si in MSWI fly ash interfered with the MOSC reaction and adversely influenced the immobilization efficiencies of Pb, As, and other elements.

Biochar-augmented carbon-negative concrete

Liang Chen et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new design of biochar-augmented concrete, which promotes cement hydration and enhances the strength of concrete by incorporating biochar as aggregate and supplementary cementitious materials. Life cycle assessment and cost-benefit analysis demonstrate that biochar-augmented concrete can significantly reduce CO2 emissions and generate economic profit.

Roles of biochar-derived dissolved organic matter in soil amendment and environmental remediation: A critical review

Yuqing Sun et al.

Summary: Biochar is a promising carbonaceous material with abundant functional groups and mesoporous structure, showing potential in improving soil fertility, retaining nutrients, enhancing microbial activity, and immobilizing contaminants. The dissolved organic matter (DOM) from biochar plays a key role in soil matrix, microbial community, and fate of contaminants, with both positive and negative effects that are influenced by various factors such as the nature of biochar-derived DOM and environmental conditions. Understanding the long-term stability and interactions of biochar-derived DOM is critical for minimizing the ecological and environmental risks of biochar application.
