Qatar genome: Insights on genomics from the Middle East

Hamdi Mbarek et al.

Summary: This study describes insights from Phase 1 of the Qatar Genome Program, where 6047 individuals from Qatar were whole genome sequenced. The results show that due to high consanguinity and founder effects in the Middle Eastern population, rare deleterious variants are more common in the Qatari population, while other variants seem to provide protection against diseases and have shaped the genetic architecture of adaptive phenotypes. These findings are valuable for advancing genetic studies in the Arab and neighboring Middle Eastern populations, as well as improving our understanding of global patterns of human variations, human history, and genetic contributions to health and diseases in diverse populations.

Effects of participation in a US trial of newborn genomic sequencing on parents at risk for depression

Talia S. Schwartz et al.

Summary: Research has shown a strong correlation between parental depressive symptoms and their child's participation in genomic studies, however, these symptoms are typically transient and most parents attribute their symptomatology to life stressors rather than participation in the trial.

Accelerated identification of disease-causing variants with ultra-rapid nanopore genome sequencing

Sneha D. Goenka et al.

Summary: This study developed an ultra-rapid nanopore whole-genome sequencing method, which efficiently identified disease-causing variants within a short period of time. The approach included optimized sample preparation, near real-time base calling and alignment, accelerated variant calling, and fast variant filtration. The results demonstrated accurate variant identification and efficient prioritization, significantly reducing the time required for clinical genome sequencing.

Developing a National Newborn Genomes Program: An Approach Driven by Ethics, Engagement and Co-design

Amanda Pichini et al.

Summary: The potential of whole genome sequencing as a diagnostic tool in healthcare has been demonstrated by initiatives such as the 100,000 Genomes Project. Now, Genomics England is working with the National Health Service (NHS) to explore the utility of whole genome sequencing in newborns. The research program aims to evaluate the feasibility and impact of screening for rare genetic conditions, develop new diagnostics and treatments, and examine the implications of storing an individual's genome for their lifetime.

A genome sequencing system for universal newborn screening, diagnosis, and precision medicine for severe genetic diseases

Stephen F. Kingsmore et al.

Summary: Newborn screening (NBS) improves outcomes in severe childhood disorders by early treatment, and rapid whole-genome sequencing (rWGS) is gaining acceptance for genetic disease diagnosis. Simulated NBS-rWGS shows high accuracy in diagnosis and potential for early intervention to prevent symptoms.
