Nanoindentation creep testing: Advantages and limitations of the constant contact pressure method

Christian Minnert et al.

Summary: Different loading protocols have been developed to investigate the creep properties of materials using instrumented indentation testing technique, with a recent focus on a new indentation creep method maintaining constant contact pressure. This study compares results from constant contact pressure creep tests with uniaxial and constant load hold indentation creep experiments, revealing similar stress exponents between constant contact pressure and uniaxial tests. Additionally, a significant change in the power law exponent at large stress reductions was observed in both uniaxial and constant contact pressure tests, indicating a shift in deformation mechanism of ultrafine grained metals.

Summary: This article comprehensively reviews recent advances in the development of ultrafine-grained and nanostructured materials through severe plastic deformation and provides a brief history of this field. Severe plastic deformation methods have been effective in producing materials with advanced mechanical and functional properties, and the field of NanoSPD has experienced significant progress in the past two decades.

Effects of solutes on thermal stability, microstructure and mechanical properties in CrMnFeCoNi based alloys after high pressure torsion

Tom Keil et al.

Summary: In this study, the microstructural stability and mechanical properties of the equiatomic Cantor alloy and its Ni-enriched derivates were investigated through high pressure torsion deformation and annealing treatment. The results showed that Ni92 and Ni100 alloys had larger grain sizes but lower resistance to grain growth. Both HEA type alloys exhibited decomposition tendencies, reducing the grain boundary mobility. Additionally, the hardness of the HEA type alloys remained constant at higher annealing temperatures, while dilute solid solutions exhibited softening.

From diluted solid solutions to high entropy alloys: Saturation grain size and mechanical properties after high pressure torsion

Tom Keil et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of solutes on saturation grain size and mechanical properties of the Cantor alloy and Ni-enriched variations. The results showed an increase in hardness due to solid solution strengthening and Hall-Petch contributions. All compositions exhibited a history dependent softening.

Solid solution hardening in CrMnFeCoNi-based high entropy alloy systems studied by a combinatorial approach

Tom Keil et al.

Summary: Solid solution hardening in high entropy alloys was studied using diffusion couples and nanoindentation in the Cantor alloy. The Labusch model and Varvenne model were used to analyze the composition-dependent hardness, confirming Cr as the most potent strengthening element. Introducing a concentration-dependent strain-hardening factor led to a good agreement between experimental and predicted yield strength in the Varvenne model.
