The CORDEX-CORE EXP-I Initiative Description and Highlight Results from the Initial Analysis

Filippo Giorgi et al.

Summary: This article describes the first effort of the Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX)-CORE EXP-I, which involves using regional climate models (RCMs) to downscale global climate model (GCM) simulations from the CMIP5 program. The results cover a wide range of topics, including extreme indices, storms, monsoons, and more. The CORDEX-CORE EXP-I ensemble provides unprecedented downscaled information to improve understanding of regional climate change and impacts.

Summary: This study evaluates the performance of three RCMs in reproducing West African rainfall, with RegCM and RegCM-ENSEMBLE showing consistently better results than other models. The ensemble mean may reduce or amplify uncertainty in climate models.

Assessment of the RegCM4 Performance in Simulating the Surface Radiation Budget and Hydrologic Balance Variables in South America

David Pareja-Quispe et al.

Summary: The Regional Climate Model v4 (RegCM4) has been evaluated for its ability to simulate surface radiation budget and hydrological balance variables over South America. Results show that while RegCM4 captures the main patterns, there are overestimations in cloudiness and surface radiation budget variables, along with some differences in hydrological balance. Despite deficiencies, RegCM4 may still be a useful tool for climate studies.

Comparison of spatial and temporal performance of two Regional Climate Models in the Amazon and La Plata river basins

Alejandro Builes-Jaramillo et al.

Summary: This study presents a comprehensive spatio-temporal performance analysis of two water balance variables simulated by two Regional Climate Models in South America. The results show that RegCM4 performs better, especially in the La Plata basin, and offers added value over the driving Global Climate Models. In terms of spatial and temporal performance metrics, RegCM4 shows a better performance even with a smaller number of members.

Evaluation of a climate simulation over the Yellow River Basin based on a regional climate model (REMO) within the CORDEX

Guojin Pang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the downscaled climate simulations over the Yellow River Basin using REMO and ERA-Interim reanalysis data. The results showed that REMO reproduced the spatial patterns of mean temperature satisfactorily, but had a wet bias in terms of precipitation. Observational data indicated significant warming trends across all four seasons, while REMO simulated weaker warming trends.
