Temperature-dependent local conformations and conformational distributions of cyanine dimer labeled single-stranded-double-stranded DNA junctions by 2D fluorescence spectroscopy

Dylan Heussman et al.

Summary: This article investigates the nature of conformational fluctuations and structural disorder at single-stranded-double-stranded DNA junctions and characterizes the local conformational parameters and distributions. The study reveals that the sugar-phosphate backbones at and near these junctions adopt specific position-dependent local conformations and exhibit varying extents of conformational disorder. The findings have important implications for understanding the molecular mechanisms of DNA replication and genome expression.

Influence of Hydrophobicity on Excitonic Coupling in DNA-Templated Indolenine Squaraine Dye Aggregates

Olga A. Mass et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of dye hydrophobicity on the strength of excitonic coupling in squaraine aggregates templated by DNA Holliday Junction. It shows a strong correlation between squaraine hydrophobicity and the strength of excitonic coupling, with dimers of dichloroindolenine squaraine exhibiting the strongest coupling strength. The research provides insights into how dye structures affect excitonic coupling in dye aggregates templated by DNA, offering guidance for the design of exciton-based materials and devices.

Tuning Optical Absorption and Emission Using Strongly Coupled Dimers in Programmable DNA Scaffolds

Stephanie M. Hart et al.

Summary: In this study, we demonstrate the ability to vary the optical absorption and emission properties of molecular materials by changing the geometry of a strongly coupled Cy3 dimer on a DNA tile. By leveraging the programmability of DNA, we observe dramatic changes in photophysics at both the ensemble and single-molecule level, including separable lifetimes and environmental sensitivity. The Cy3-DX tile constructs have potential applications in fluorescence imaging and could provide a framework for controllable photophysics in light-harvesting devices and molecular electronics.

Modulating TTA efficiency through control of high energy triplet states

Andrew J. Carrod et al.

Summary: This study improves the quantum efficiency of upconversion by controlling the energetics of triplet states through molecular design. The ideal energy configuration can achieve a maximum of 50% quantum efficiency, while less-optimal energy configurations can only achieve 20% quantum efficiency. Oblique Packing and Tunable Excitonic Coupling in DNA-Templated Squaraine Rotaxane Dimer Aggregates

Matthew S. Barclay et al.

Summary: An elusive oblique packing arrangement in molecules is achieved using mechanically interlocked molecules. The spatial arrangement of molecules is controlled by templating and chemical substitution. The distinct signature of oblique packing is observed in the absorption spectra and validated by theoretical modeling. Fine control of packing is demonstrated by fluorinating the macrocycle of the molecules.

Spiro Rhodamine-Perylene Compact Electron Donor-Acceptor Dyads: Conformation Restriction, Charge Separation, and Spin-Orbit Charge Transfer Intersystem Crossing

Mengyu Hu et al.

Summary: Electron donor-acceptor dyads Rho-Pery were prepared to study the spin-orbit charge transfer intersystem crossing in these rigid and sterically congested molecular systems. The fluorescence of the dyads is significantly quenched in polar solvents, and the singlet oxygen quantum yields are strongly dependent on solvent polarity. Femtosecond transient absorption spectra show rapid charge separation and slow charge recombination, while nanosecond transient absorption spectra reveal the formation of triplet states via SOCT-ISC with distorted p-framework resulting in shorter triplet lifetime. Time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy confirms the SOCT-ISC mechanism.

Realistic Efficiency Limits for Singlet-Fission Silicon Solar Cells

Benjamin Daiber et al.

Summary: Singlet fission is a carrier multiplication mechanism that can significantly increase the efficiency of silicon solar cells. The efficiency potential of singlet fission implementations in silicon solar cells varies depending on the transfer mechanism and singlet energy level. It is shown that the efficiency gain from singlet fission is greater for more efficient silicon base cells, unlike tandem perovskite-silicon solar cells.
