Insight into the Active Contribution of N-Coordinated Cobalt Phosphate Nanocrystals Coupled with Carbon Nanotubes for Oxygen Electrochemistry

Lei Chen et al.

Summary: Synthesis of diamond necklace-like N-coordinated cobalt phosphate nanocrystals coupled with carbon nanotubes (CoPiC-DP/CNTs) as a bifunctional electrocatalyst demonstrates impressive ORR and OER electrochemical activities, essential for the development of rechargeable metal-air batteries. Active contribution of N-coordinated cobalt sites and suitable carbon substrate for enhanced electrocatalytic performance is confirmed through structural characterizations and electrochemical measurements of cobalt phosphate-carbon hybrids. Application of CoPiC-DP/CNTs in liquid- and solid-state zinc-air batteries shows decreased charge-discharge potential gaps, high power density, and considerable cycling durability, beneficial for potential development of flexible/portable electronic devices.

A Conjugated Porous Polymer Complexed with a Single-Atom Cobalt Catalyst as An Electrocatalytic Sulfur Host for Enhancing Cathode Reaction Kinetics

Xueying Fan et al.

Summary: CMPs with single-atom Co catalysts (Co-CMP) show great potential for use in Li-S batteries due to their unique structures and tunable functionality. The Co-CMP, synthesized with a dibromo salcyen Co complex and thris(ethynylthiophene)triazine, exhibits outstanding performance in terms of specific capacity, rate capability, and cycling stability. Density functional theory calculations and X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy measurements demonstrate that the single-atom Co catalyst in Co-CMP lowers cathode reaction energies by interacting with polysulfide anions and Li cations. Additionally, the modular methodology used for synthesizing Co-CMP allows for the creation of new CMPs with predictable structures and functions for broader catalytic applications.

Insights into efficient transition metal-nitrogen/carbon oxygen reduction electrocatalysts

Hao-Yu Wang et al.

Summary: The importance of accelerating the sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) process at the cathode with earth-abundant metal-based catalysts for the commercialization of low-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells is discussed. Transition metal-nitrogen-carbon (M-N/C) catalysts are considered as the most promising non-precious metal catalysts for ORR, due to their high catalytic activity, long-term stability, and low cost. Different M-N/C catalysts classified by precursors and strategies for design and optimization are highlighted, along with the challenges and possible opportunities for future development of high-performance ORR catalysts.
