Kinetics of oligomer-forming reactions involving the major functional groups present in atmospheric secondary organic aerosol particles

Hannah K. Maben et al.

Summary: Atmospheric organic aerosol particles have significant impacts on climate, human health, and environmental health. Secondary organic aerosol (SOA), formed by the gas-to-particle partitioning of oxidized volatile organic compounds (VOCs), contributes a large fraction of the organic material in aerosols. This study investigated the accretion reactions of compounds containing reactive hydroperoxide, hydroxyl, carboxyl, aldehyde, and ketone groups in organic/aqueous mixtures. The reactions and products were characterized, and the rate and equilibrium constants were determined. These findings provide valuable insights into the formation of atmospheric aerosols and can improve the modeling of SOA chemistry.

Modelling the gas-particle partitioning and water uptake of isoprene-derived secondary organic aerosol at high and low relative humidity

Dalrin Ampritta Amaladhasan et al.

Summary: This study characterizes the hygroscopic growth behavior and effects of inorganic seed particles on the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) from the dark ozone-initiated oxidation of isoprene at low NOx conditions. The simulations predict different SOA concentrations based on the presence of seed particles and relative humidity levels. The measurements show an increase in SOA amounts at higher relative humidity levels compared to lower levels. The presence of an aqueous inorganic seed enhances the SOA yield regardless of the seed type.

Summary: The study found that glyoxylic and pyruvic acids exhibit high conformational diversity in aqueous solutions, with the gem-diol form strongly favored over the oxo form in water. Through atomic-scale simulations, new insights into reaction mechanisms were provided, focusing on hydrogen-bond arrangements and the electronic structure of the transition state.
