Role of intrinsic defects in cubic NaNbO3: A computational study based on hybrid density-functional theory

Lorenzo Villa et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found through calculations that the dominant defects in antiferroelectric NaNbO3 material are Na and O vacancies, and the material is an n-type semiconductor for almost all oxygen partial pressures. Additionally, the presence of a defect complex (V-Na-V-O-V-Na) was predicted, which is stable under n- or p-type doping conditions.

Design of Lead-Free Antiferroelectric (1-x)NaNbO3-xSrSnO3 Compositions Guided by First-Principles Calculations

Mao-Hua Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a general approach was demonstrated to promote the reversibility of the unique electric-field-induced phase transition in antiferroelectric materials by modifying the material's local structure. A new composition based on NaNbO3, (1- x)NaNbO3-xSrSnO(3), was designed using first-principles calculations and experimental characterization. The results showed that the addition of SrSnO3 can enhance the stability of the antiferroelectric order and increase the energy storage density of the modified compositions.

Summary: The study investigates the electric field-induced phase transition in lead-free antiferroelectric materials, revealing a separation between the structural antiferroelectric-ferroelectric phase transition and polarization switching process, which is attributed to the presence of randomly oriented grains and mechanical stress at the phase boundary.
