Understanding the Water-in-Salt to Salt-in-Water Characteristics across the Zinc Chloride : Water Phase Diagram

Shelby B. Pillai et al.

Summary: By conducting experiments, this study establishes the relationship between ZnCl2 and its hydrates and determines the phase diagram of ZnCl2:H2O. The results show the formation of hydrates of ZnCl2 at certain water contents, and the loss of HCl in diluted solutions. The strong interaction between ZnCl2 and water has a significant impact on the properties of the solvent water.

Surface Forces and Structure in a Water-in-Salt Electrolyte

Timothy S. Groves et al.

Summary: Water-in-salt electrolytes are a novel class of aqueous solutions with wide electrochemical stability windows, but the high ion concentration makes them less understood compared to more dilute electrolyte solutions. Research has shown that these electrolytes form a layered structure at charged interfaces, composed of a hydrated cation nanostructure and nonaqueous anion-rich domains, which will impact their capacitance and double-layer behavior for energy storage applications.

Ion Clusters and Networks in Water-in-Salt Electrolytes

Michael McEldrew et al.

Summary: Water-in-salt electrolytes (WiSEs) are a type of super-concentrated electrolytes that have the potential to replace organic electrolytes in lithium-ion batteries. Research has shown that complex ionic associations and large branched clusters can form in WiSEs at extremely high salt concentrations. A simplified thermodynamic model has been developed to quantitatively reproduce the populations of ionic clusters, critical salt concentration for ionic gelation, and other parameters in WiSEs.

Is There Anything Better than Pt for HER?

Johannes Novak Hansen et al.

Summary: Efforts to find cheap alternatives to platinum for the hydrogen evolution reaction have not yet found a catalyst with intrinsic activity that can compete with platinum. It is important to measure intrinsic catalytic activities and consider the impact of mass-transport limitations on observed activity. Despite achieving the highest turnover frequency for platinum, the true intrinsic HER activity for platinum in acid remains unknown due to mass transport limitations.
