Photocatalytic Chlorination of Methane Using Alkali Chloride Solution

Dongmiao Li et al.

Summary: The development of direct conversion for selective functionalization of inert methane plays a key role in the field of chemical sciences. In this study, a photocatalytic approach using NaTaO3 as the catalyst and alkali chloride solution as the chlorine source was successfully implemented to convert methane into methyl chloride under ambient conditions. The best photocatalyst, Ag2O/NaTaO3, achieved a CH3Cl yield of 152 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) in aqueous NaCl solutions with an apparent quantum yield of 7.2% under 254 nm light irradiation. This work provides a meaningful approach for the conversion of methane into chloromethane under normal conditions.
