Summary: In children with asymptomatic cCMV, vestibular, gaze, and balance disorders are highly prevalent. This study found abnormalities in semicircular canals, the inner ear, and vestibulo-visual tracts, along with difficulties in maintaining gaze during head movement and balance. Screening and intervention for these disorders are needed in this population.

Summary: cCMV infection is a major cause of hearing loss and neurological disabilities in children globally. Most infants with cCMV are asymptomatic at birth, but 10-15% will develop hearing loss. Diagnosis relies on detecting the virus from urine or saliva within the first three weeks of life, with saliva PCR being the preferred method. Prevention strategies are limited, and antiviral therapy is standard for infants with symptomatic cCMV.

Summary: This study synthesized the evidence on the association between congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection and permanent childhood hearing loss. Results showed that congenital CMV infection is an important risk factor for hearing loss in children and should be considered in screening and follow-up programs.

On the Nature of Hearing Loss in Meniere's Disease

Summary: The pathophysiology of hearing loss in Meniere's disease may be explained by paralysis of the cochlear amplifier function of the outer hair cells due to the toxicity of viral nucleic acids (NA) released from neurotropic viruses in the vestibular nerve ganglion. Short-term symptoms of Meniere's disease (<2 years) are more likely to experience hearing recovery with antiviral drugs.
