Curvature-assisted self-assembly of Brownian squares on cylindrical surfaces

Huaqing Liu et al.

Summary: The study investigates the self-assembly of Brownian colloids on curved surfaces, demonstrating the significant influence of curvature on the phase behavior. Experimental findings reveal phase diagram changes with curvature, while simulations illustrate helical structures formed by square platelets packing on cylinders. These results highlight the control over particle self-assembly through curvature and depletion attraction-induced orientational confinement.

A theory of entropic bonding

Thi Vo et al.

Summary: Entropy can self-assemble hard nanoparticles into colloidal crystals with structures similar to atomic and molecular crystals. A first-principles theory is proposed to describe the directional entropic forces between hard shapes by calculating and minimizing the excluded volume. The theory successfully predicts the thermodynamically preferred structures for different families of hard polyhedra.

Hard superellipse phases: particle shape anisotropy & curvature

Isaac Torres-Diaz et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between the phases of two-dimensional convex hard superellipse particles and particle shape parameters through computer simulations. By analyzing various shapes including disks, ellipses, squares, rectangles, and rhombuses, as well as shapes with non-uniform curvature, the researchers identify key shape properties that determine liquid crystal and crystalline phases. The results provide design rules for particle shapes to achieve specific two-dimensional microstructures.

Particle-resolved topological defects of smectic colloidal liquid crystals in extreme confinement

Rene Wittmann et al.

Summary: This study investigates the intrinsic structure of smectic colloidal layers in confined liquid crystal samples, revealing the interplay between entropy and imposed external topology. Various competing states, with nontrivial defect structures, are found under annular confinement conditions.

Topology of Orientational Defects in Confined Smectic Liquid Crystals

Paul A. Monderkamp et al.

Summary: A general formalism is proposed to characterize orientational frustration of smectic liquid crystals in confinement by interpreting the emerging networks of grain boundaries as objects with a topological charge. Coexisting nematic and tetratic order is analyzed with Monte Carlo simulations and colloidal experiments, showing how the observed defect networks can be reconstructed from simple building blocks. The curvature of the confining wall determines the anchoring behavior of grain boundaries, allowing for tuning of the number of nodes and location of end points in the emerging networks.
