Summary: Inhabitants of the Greater Mekong Subregion in Cambodia have been exposed to pathogens that may affect serologic cross-reactivity with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. A prepandemic serosurvey of 528 malaria-infected individuals demonstrated higher-than-expected positivity of nonneutralizing IgG to spike and receptor-binding domain antigens. These findings could impact the interpretation of large-scale serosurveys.

Impact of asymptomatic Plasmodium falciparum infection on the risk of subsequent symptomatic malaria in a longitudinal cohort in Kenya

Summary: This study in sub-Saharan Africa found that asymptomatic Plasmodium falciparum infections can quickly lead to symptomatic malaria, with females at higher risk than males. The increased risk of symptomatic malaria was observed in asymptomatic infections of all densities and in people of all ages, with long-term risk present in children under age 5. In high-transmission settings, targeting asymptomatic P. falciparum infections may help reduce the incidence of symptomatic illness.
