Rational Design of Electrolyte Solvation Structures for Modulating 2e-/4e- Transfer in Sodium-Air Batteries

Xiecheng Yang et al.

Summary: This work proposes a promising strategy to dynamically modulate the 2e(-)/4e(-) transfer in oxygen reduction reactions (ORRs) by regulating the electrolyte structures in sodium-air batteries (SABs), achieving different performances of SABs. By adjusting the electrolyte concentration, the 4e(-) ORR can be achieved, resulting in excellent power density. Increasing the electrolyte concentration remarkably reduces the solvation energies of Na+ and promotes the 2e(-) ORR reaction, leading to high energy density.

Non-Noble-Metal Catalyst and Zn/Graphene Film for Low-Cost and Ultra-Long-Durability Solid-State Zn-Air Batteries in Harsh Electrolytes

Xinxin Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, the classical Fe3C-NG catalysts were synthesized and investigated for their catalytic and degradation behaviors in Zn-Air batteries. The study found that the Mott-Schottky heterojunction formed by Fe3C quantum dots and N-doped graphene carbon boosts the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) by providing rapid electron transfer. Additionally, the graphene structure in NG was found to be stable in corrosive electrolytes, preventing the corrosion of Fe3C quantum dots. Combining the catalyst with a Zn/graphene composite film and solid-state electrolyte resulted in a high-performance and stable Zn-air battery.

Towards high-performance aqueous zinc-ion battery via cesium ion intercalated vanadium oxide nanorods

Yae Qi et al.

Summary: Layered vanadium oxide cathode materials have been extensively studied in rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries due to their large interlayer distance and high capacity. However, these materials suffer from fast capacity decay during long-term cycles. In this study, cesium ions were intercalated into hydrated vanadium pentoxide to reinforce the layered structure and enhance the interaction between layers, resulting in improved specific capacity and excellent long-term cycle stability.

Simultaneous reversible tuning of H+ and Zn2+ coinsertion in MnO2 cathode for high-capacity aqueous Zn-ion battery

Zhoutai Shang et al.

Summary: Protons and zinc ions are used as charge carriers for rechargeable Zn/MnO2 batteries, providing high safety and low cost. The introduction of an encapsulated structure within alpha-MnO2 nanofibers helps modulate the interfacial charge transfer process and enables reversible H+ and Zn2+ insertion/extraction. The battery exhibits high discharge capacity, excellent rate capability, and long lifespan in ZnSO4 electrolyte. A flexible solid-state Zn/MnO2 full cell is also demonstrated with a high energy density.

Rationally Designed Mn2O3-ZnMn2O4 Hollow Heterostructures from Metal-Organic Frameworks for Stable Zn-Ion Storage

Yinxiang Zeng et al.

Summary: By developing a two-step metal-organic framework (MOF)-engaged templating strategy, heterostructured Mn2O3-ZnMn2O4 hollow octahedrons (MO-ZMO HOs) were synthesized for stable zinc ion storage. The MO-ZMO HOs exhibit abundant active sites, enhanced electric conductivity, and superior structural stability, resulting in high reversible capacity, impressive rate performance, and outstanding electrochemical stability. Ex situ characterizations reveal that the charge storage of MO-ZMO HOs mainly comes from highly reversible Zn2+ insertion/extraction reactions.
