Recent progress in PIM-1 based membranes for sustainable CO2 separations: Polymer structure manipulation and mixed matrix membrane design

Shanshan He et al.

Summary: This article summarizes the latest progress in modification strategies for PIM-1 based membranes, including the design and modification of PIM-1 intrinsic structure and the fabrication of PIM-1/nanofiller mixed matrix membranes. The focus of the research is to improve the selectivity and long-term stability of PIM-1 membranes for crucial gas separations such as CO2 capture.

Behavior and mechanism of graphene oxide-tris(4-aminophenyl) amine composites in adsorption of rare earth elements

Xiaoru Zhao et al.

Summary: Three-dimensional graphene oxide-tris(4-aminophenyl)amine (GO-TAPAx:y) composites with different GO-to-TAPA mass ratios were prepared and characterized for their adsorption capacities of rare earth elements (REEs). The results indicate that the introduction of specific molecules enhances the adsorption ability of the composites, making them feasible for the enrichment of REE ions in real samples.

PIM-1/Holey Graphene Oxide Mixed Matrix Membranes for Gas Separation: Unveiling the Role of Holes

Jose Miguel Luque-Alled et al.

Summary: Nanopores were created in gas-impermeable GO and functionally activated to prepare hybrid PIM-1/holey GO membranes, which exhibited higher CO2 permeability and CO2/CH4 selectivity than pure polymer membranes. The mitigation of physical aging was significantly improved by using functionalized holey GO nanofillers, maintaining a higher percentage of initial CO2 permeability over time.

Recovery of free volume in PIM-1 membranes through alcohol vapor treatment

Faiz Almansour et al.

Summary: Physical aging is a major obstacle for the commercialization of PIM-1 membranes for gas separation applications. A regeneration method using alcohol vapors was developed to recover permeability of aged PIM-1 membranes, showing that an 8-hour methanol vapor treatment was sufficient to recover the original gas permeability.

Gas separation performance of MMMs containing (PIM-1)-functionalized GO derivatives

Jose Miguel Luque-Alled et al.

Summary: A strategy to reduce physical aging in PIM-1 membranes by incorporating novel functionalized graphene oxide (GO) fillers is reported. The best performance was achieved by a membrane containing 10 wt% of (PIM-1)-functionalized APTS-GO, maintaining 85% of the initial CO2 permeability after 150 days. This represents about nine-fold less CO2 permeability drop compared to pure PIM-1.

Importance of small loops within PIM-1 topology on gas separation selectivity in thin film composite membranes

Andrew B. Foster et al.

Summary: Blends of different topological samples of PIM-1 polymer can dramatically vary the selectivity and aging behavior of thin film composite membranes for the CO2/N-2 gas pair. The optimal polymerization process can produce a topologically rich sample with multi-loop polymeric structure for improved gas separation performance in TFC membranes.
