The impact of molecular self-organisation on the atmospheric fate of a cooking aerosol proxy

Adam Milsom et al.

Summary: Atmospheric aerosols have a significant impact on climate through cloud droplet nucleation and the long-range transport of harmful pollutants. This study focuses on the role of fatty acids, particularly oleic acid, in organic aerosol emissions. The research demonstrates that the self-organization of oleic acid into nanostructured lamellar bilayers influences reaction kinetics, leading to a decreased diffusivity for both oleic acid and ozone. This discovery has important implications for the transport of harmful pollutants and climate.

Fluorescence characteristics of water-soluble organic carbon in atmospheric aerosol

Guangming Wu et al.

Summary: Fluorescence spectroscopy is commonly used to analyze dissolved organic matter in aquatic environments, and its application in atmospheric aerosols has been increasing. However, current research on WSOC characterization in the atmosphere is still limited and presents challenges. Studies focus on the impact of photochemical reactions and aging processes on fluorescence properties of atmospheric WSOC, as well as the differences in fluorescent components between the atmosphere and hydrosphere.

Ozonolysis of Oleic Acid Aerosol Revisited: Multiphase Chemical Kinetics and Reaction Mechanisms

Thomas Berkemeier et al.

Summary: The chemical processing of organic aerosol particles plays a crucial role in atmospheric chemistry, climate, and public health. Heterogeneous oxidation of oleic acid particles by ozone is a commonly studied model system. However, there are systematic differences and inconsistencies in existing kinetic data and mechanistic analyses, which can be reconciled with consistent sets of multiphase chemical kinetic parameters through inverse modeling. Further experimental evidence is needed to uniquely determine these parameters and it is suggested that secondary reactions involving Criegee intermediates are essential for resolving discrepancies found in earlier studies.

An organic crystalline state in ageing atmospheric aerosol proxies: spatially resolved structural changes in levitated fatty acid particles

Adam Milsom et al.

Summary: The study reveals the existence of crystalline acid-soap complexes in organic aerosols and emphasizes that the atmospheric lifetime of organic species in aerosols highly depends on their phase state. These findings have significant implications for climate, urban air quality, and the long-range transport of pollutants.

Ozonolysis of fatty acid monolayers at the air-water interface: organic films may persist at the surface of atmospheric aerosols

Benjamin Woden et al.

Summary: The study focused on the ozonolysis of fatty acid monolayers to understand the behavior of organic-coated aerosols under realistic atmospheric conditions. Residual surface films, suspected to be formed of nonanoic acid and a mixture of compounds, were found to be retained at the interface after ozonolysis at near-zero temperatures, with potential implications for cloud formation. The presence of stable reaction products also indicates the possibility of inert monolayer build-up during the aerosol life cycle.
