Inertial Migration of Neutrally Buoyant Spherical Particles in Square Channels at Moderate and High Reynolds Numbers

Yanfeng Gao et al.

Summary: In this study, in situ visualization of particles flowing in square microchannels at different Reynolds numbers was conducted to analyze their migration behaviors. The results confirmed the appearance of new equilibrium positions above a critical Reynolds number, as well as the identification of an optimal Reynolds number for maximal particle positioning on equilibrium positions. Additionally, the longitudinal ordering process of particles on equilibrium positions was analyzed for different flow conditions investigated in this study.

Self-Organizing Microdroplet Protocells Displaying Light-Driven Oscillatory and Morphological Evolution

Gong Cheng et al.

Summary: The study reports microdroplet protocells formed through active self-assembly, showing dynamic structures and high complexity. These microdroplet protocells exhibit nonlinear behaviors such as oscillatory growth and shrinkage. The intercommunication of these protocells through stochastic fusion leads to the formation of diverse dynamic and higher-order biomimetic microstructures.

Enzyme-Catalyzed Hydrolysis of Lipids in Immiscible Microdroplets Studied by Contained-Electrospray Ionization

Benjamin J. Burris et al.

Summary: Enzyme-catalyzed hydrolysis of lipids was monitored directly in immiscible microdroplet environments using contained-electrospray mass spectrometry. Different lipid types were utilized to identify possible mechanisms for lipase reactivity in aerosols, showing enhancement factors favoring the droplet experiment.

Electrochemical quantification of accelerated FADGDH rates in aqueous nanodroplets

Kathryn J. Vannoy et al.

Summary: Enzymes trapped in submicrometer water nanodroplets suspended in 1,2-dichloroethane exhibit a significant enhancement in reaction rate, with enzymatic activity observed when single nanodroplets irreversibly adsorb onto an ultramicroelectrode surface. By integrating the current-time response and using Faraday's Law, the relationship between enzyme activity and nanodroplet size could be studied, providing insights into parameters influencing single nanodroplet enzymology.

Peptide-based coacervates as biomimetic protocells

Manzar Abbas et al.

Summary: Coacervates are condensed liquid-like droplets formed by liquid-liquid phase separation of molecules through weak associative interactions. Peptides, with diverse amino acid residues, can tailor their phase separation propensity and selectivity in guest molecule uptake, making them attractive as building blocks for biomimetic protocells. This review summarizes recent developments in peptide-based coacervates and outlines the potential for active droplets in moving away from thermodynamic equilibrium.

Ambient microdroplet annealing of nanoparticles†

Angshuman Ray Chowdhuri et al.

Summary: Ambient electrospray can quickly convert preformed polydisperse nanoparticles into monodisperse particles, which then spontaneously self-assemble to form organized films within seconds. Uniform nanoparticles can be obtained without the need for additional chemicals or templates, and this method shows potential for creating advanced materials.
