Monitoring and evaluation of the repair quality of concrete cracks using piezoelectric smart aggregates

Hao Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a method to monitor and evaluate the repair quality of concrete cracks using piezoelectric smart aggregates (SAs). The principle of stress wave propagation in the repairing process of concrete cracks is explored, and an energy analysis method based on wavelet packet is developed to quantitatively characterize the signal energy. The proposed repair index can monitor the crack repair process in real time and has the potential to evaluate the repair performance of different crack repair materials.

Effects of early-age temperature and salt ion corrosion on the macroproperty deterioration of concrete and corresponding micromechanism

Weipei Xue et al.

Summary: This paper experimentally investigates the variations in macroscopic properties of concrete under the interaction of early-age temperature and salt ion corrosion, focusing on the perspective of pore structure and microcracks. The results indicate a prominent initial defect compaction stage in the compressive stress-strain curves of specimens, with an increase in the number of pores and a high degree of crack development. Peak strength, secant elastic modulus, and porosity of the specimens are significantly affected by the interaction between early-age temperature and salt ion corrosion, showing a clear deterioration trend.

Ferritic calcium sulfoaluminate belite cement from metallurgical industry residues and phosphogypsum: Clinker production, scale-up, and microstructural characterisation

Visa Isteri et al.

Summary: The production of ferrite-rich calcium sulfoaluminate belite (CSABF) cement clinker, containing MgO, from ladle slag, Fe-slag, and phosphogypsum was successfully scaled up from lab-scale to a pilot demonstration. Excess CaO was found to inhibit gehlenite formation in the clinker, but it also resulted in higher ferrite content. Microstructural analysis of the clinker revealed different ferrite phases with varying amounts of titanium and iron. This study demonstrates the potential of reducing CO2 emissions and improving resource efficiency in regions with a thriving metallurgical industry.

Real-time monitoring of humidity inside concrete structures utilizing embedded smart aggregates

Hao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study uses an active monitoring method to observe the humidity of concrete in real time by embedding piezoelectric smart aggregates in the concrete. A humidity index is defined to describe the variation in humidity of the concrete. The experimental results demonstrate that the humidity index is effective in monitoring and evaluating the humidity inside concrete structures.

Modification of phosphogypsum using circulating fluidized bed fly ash and carbide slag for use as cement retarder

Beixing Li et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively modified phosphogypsum using carbide slag, circulating fluidized bed (CFB) fly ash, and other solid wastes, and investigated the influence of material ratio and aging time on the modification effect. The modification mechanism of carbide slag and CFB fly ash on phosphogypsum and the effect of modified phosphogypsum on the hydration characteristics of Portland cement were revealed. The results show that the modified phosphogypsum effectively reduces the contents of soluble phosphorus and soluble fluorine, increases the pH value, enhances the strength of phosphogypsum, and improves the retardation effect of Portland cement.

Experimental study of permeability evolution in modified desulfurization gypsum under complete stress-strain process

Weipei Xue et al.

Summary: In the context of low-carbon economy and sustainable development, industrial by-products are being transformed into green building materials. This study examined the effects of groundwater on modified desulfurization gypsum by simulating underground engineering conditions. It was found that an increase in pore water pressure led to decreased strength and increased permeability. The permeability was more sensitive to circumferential deformation. Critical impermeability strength and abrupt permeability were defined based on permeability-stress curves.

Chinnasamy Samy Madan et al.

Summary: This article investigates the flexural behavior of concrete slabs reinforced with glass-fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) sheets as an alternative to steel bars. The experimental results show that high-volume fly ash concrete slabs reinforced with GFRP sheets provide a better alternative compared to steel reinforcement, leading to sustainable construction.

Effects of phosphogypsum on hydration properties and strength of calcium aluminate cement

Jiangchuan Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the performance of phosphogypsum mixed with calcium aluminate cement (CAC) and found that with the increase of phosphogypsum content, the setting time and flowability of CAC decreased, while the compressive strength increased. However, when the phosphogypsum content exceeded 15%, the growth rate of compressive strength slowed down.

Hydration, reinforcing mechanism, and macro performance of multi-layer graphene-modified cement composites

Kai Cui et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of multi-layer graphene (MLG) on the hydration, microstructure, and mechanical properties of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) prepared with sulphoaluminate cement. The results show that adding MLG can significantly enhance the macro performance of UHPC, improving its flexural strength and compressive strength at different curing times. The study also reveals the reinforcing mechanism of MLG, which includes filling pores and preventing micro-crack extension.

Mechanical properties and mechanism of nano-CaCO3 enhanced sulphoaluminate cement-based reactive powder concrete

Kai Cui et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the addition of nano-CaCO3 in sulphoaluminate cement-based reactive powder concrete (RPC) can shorten setting time, improve strength, and enhance hydration properties. The results also showed an increase in heat flow rate and cumulative heat of hydration with higher nano-CaCO3 content. Additionally, the XRD, TG, ICP, and isothermal calorimetry results indicated that nano-CaCO3 promotes the hydration process of RPC by forming more hydration products and compacting the microstructure.
