Single- and Multifraction Stereotactic Radiosurgery Dose/Volume Tolerances of the Brain

Michael T. Milano et al.

Summary: This study pooled data from 51 reports to investigate radiation-induced brain toxicity after hypofractionated radiation therapy. Results showed wide variability in rates of radionecrosis, with single-fraction SRS tissue volumes receiving 12 Gy associated with risks of symptomatic radionecrosis. The use of fSRS appears to reduce risks of radionecrosis for larger treatment volumes compared to SRS.

Risk of symptomatic radiation necrosis in patients treated with stereotactic radiosurgery for brain metastases

Mutlay Sayan et al.

Summary: Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is effective in treating patients with brain metastases, but some patients may develop symptomatic radiation necrosis (RN). Risk factors for symptomatic RN include larger tumor size, single-fraction SRS treatment, and diabetes.
